York Revolution News Release
Sean Smith laid down a squeeze bunt with two outs in the bottom of the 14th inning, lifting the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the York Revolution in the first of a split six-game home-and-home series between the two clubs on Friday evening in front of 4,918 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium. The teams will play the next two days in Waldorf, MD before the Revs return home on Tuesday evening, hosting the Blue Crabs in York.
The Revs led 1-0 most of the game thanks to a home run to left-center by Andres Perez leading off the fourth inning. That was the game's only run until two outs in the bottom of the ninth, when Southern Maryland catcher Alvin Colina grounded a game-tying single into left, forcing extras.
York closer Juan Rincon was charged with just his second blown save in 12 opportunities, as the ninth inning rally began after he had recorded the first two outs and jumped ahead of Cyle Hankerd 0-2 before losing him to a walk. Cesar Nicolas then singled off the left field wall, moving Hankerd to third in advance of Colina's single.
The Revs loaded the bases with one out in the 11th, but Southern Maryland reliever Jeff Stevens (3-0) entered to escape, and worked 3.2 scoreless innings without allowing a hit to earn the win.
Southern Maryland nearly won the game in the 13th, but Renny Osuna was thrown out at the plate by Jeff Fiorentino while attempting to score on a single to left by Ryan Mulhern. Osuna argued the call, resulting in his ejection.
Joe Torres (2-2) was an out away from sending the game to a 15th inning, but ninth place hitter Mike Richard blooped a single to center to place runners at the corners, setting up Smith's game-winning squeeze bunt on the right side of the infield.
York starter Rick Zagone took a no-decision, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. He worked 5.0 scoreless in his previous start, and has now allowed just two runs in 14.2 innings over three outings with the Revs.
The game tied the longest game innings-wise in Revolution history for the fourth time overall and second time this season. The Revs have now lost all four 14-inning contests they've played.
York 's Brett Tomko (1-5, 5.60) faces Southern Maryland's Ian Marshall (5-2, 3.26) on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, YorkRevolution.com, and on the Shoutcast phone app (YorkRevs) beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
