Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Central Islip, NY)--- Southern Maryland came into the night 3-9 in the month of August, and were looking to beat a team they have struggled with this season in the Long Island Ducks. After a couple of opportunities late, Southern Maryland was unable to push enough runs across as they fell to the Ducks 7-6 in ten innings.
Southern Maryland got off to a great start in the top of the first, scoring four runs, Casey Stevenson started the rally with a one out walk, followed by a Zach Wilson, and Jovan Rosa single to load the bases for Gustavo Molina. Gustavo got a great pitch to hit, and drove it over the wall in left to record the first grand slam of the season for Southern Maryland to make it 4-0.
In the top of the second Casey Stevenson doubled to right, followed by a double to left by Zach Wilson to score Stevenson to make it 5-0. Long Island cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Anthony Vega's RBI single scored Cody Puckett to make it 5-1.
Long Island scored four unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth combined. After scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth, Delta Cleary Jr. started things off with a single left field. Cleary Jr. stole second base, and the next hitter Dan Lyons ripped a double to right field to score Cleary Jr. to make it 5-3. LHP Trey Barham was summoned out of the bullpen by manager Stan Cliburn, and the next hitter Sean Burroughs lashed a single to first to put runners at first and third. The next hitter Cody Puckett walked to the dish and doubled to right field to score Dan Lyons to make it 5-4. Mike Blanke reached base on an error by the shortstop Casey Frawley to score the tying run Sean Burroughs to make it 5-5.
Both teams were held scoreless in the next two innings, and in the bottom of the eighth, Long Island took the lead. After a Lentini single, he would later score on a steal of home to make it 6-5.
Southern Maryland rallied and tied it in the ninth. LHP Donnie Veal came on to pitch for Long Island. Grant Zawadzki singled to start the rally. Tyler Wagner then walked to put the next hitter Casey Stevenson in a bunting situation. Casey would drop down the bunt, and reach base on the error by the first baseman Sean Burroughs to load the bases. After a 6-2-3 double play, Tyler Wagner scored the tying run on a wild pitch to make it 6-6.
Long Island was held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, and in the top of the tenth, the Blue Crabs provided nerve racking moments by loading the bases for Grant Zawadzki with one out. Grant grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat. In the bottom of the tenth, Dan Lyons led things off with a single. Sean Burroughs advanced to first on fielder's choice, followed by a Cody Puckett single to load the bases.
