Blue Crabs Come out Swinging in Victory

(Camden, NJ. June 21, 2015)---Southern Maryland fell down early, but scored in spread out fashion this afternoon as they defeated the Camden Riversharks by an 8-5 final in a wild ballgame at Campbell's Field today.

In the bottom of the first, Joel Guzman singled, followed by a Carlos Guzman single to put runners at first and third. Paddy Matera then lashed a double to score Joel, and Carlos Guzman to make it 2-0 Camden.

Southern Maryland tied the game in the top of the third as Jamar Walton led off with a single. Casey Frawley then tripled to score Walton to make it 2-1. Two batters later, Casey Stevenson singled to score Casey Frawley to tie the game at 2-2. After Casey Frawley was hit by a pitch in the top of the fifth, with two outs, Casey Stevenson doubled allowing Frawley to score to give the Blue Crabs a 3-2 lead.

Camden would counter in the bottom of the fifth. After back to back singles by Daniel Rockett, and Joel Guzman, Orlando Santos was called on out of the bullpen for starter Brian Baker. Carlos Guzman would reach base on a fielder's choice, allowing Rockett to score on an error by the first baseman Zach Wilson to tie the game at 3-3. After a Paddy Matera strikeout, Ryan Strieby drove one over the wall for a two run homerun to make it a 5-3 ballgame.

The Blue Crabs did not go away quietly though as they score five unanswered runs in the next two innings. In the top of the sixth, Jake Opitz singled with two outs, and the next hitter, Jovan Rosa hit a two run homer to tie the game at five. In the top of the seventh, Casey Frawley started the rally off with a single. The next hitter Fred Lewis hit his first homer of the season to give the Blue Crabs the lead. T.J. Chism then came on to pitch out pf the bullpen, and Casey Stevenson stepped up and hit a homerun over the right field wall to give the Blue Crabs an 8-5 lead.

Cody Eppley, Justin Berg, and Erik Hamren each pitched three innings of scoreless baseball, while the Blue Crabs offense banged out 14 hits this afternoon. Casey Stevenson went 3-5 with three runs driven in, while Fred Lewis and Jovan Rosa drove in two runs apiece. Paddy Matera, and Ryan Strieby each had two RBIs apiece for Camden.

The series finale is tomorrow in Camden at 7:05 P.M. RHP Jake Hale (7-2, 2.19) will start for Southern Maryland, while LHP Bill Murphy (1-7, 6.55) will throw for Camden.
