Lexington County Blowfish News Release
COLUMBIA, SC- The Columbia Blowfish (8-13) sweep their arch-rivals the Florence RedWolves (13-7) in a Wednesday night double header, that saw the Blowfish offense explode back to life by out scoring the RedWolves 6-1 (Game One) and 2-1 (Game Two).
In game one a pitchers duel broke out in the first couple of innings as Columbia starting pitcher Christian Pelham (Spartanburg Methodist) threw 5 innings, allowing 1 earned run off of 2 hits, and struck out 5 on 96 pitches. The one earned run came across when Pelham threw a wild pitch over the head of starting catcher Tyler Lancaster (Spartanburg Methodist).
On the opposite side of the mound RedWolves starter Jordan Peterson (St. Joseph's) got out to a great start as threw 4 scoreless innings and ended up with a line of 4.2 innings pitched, 3 earned runs allowed on 4 hits, and struck out 4 on 71 pitches.
Peterson seemed to be cruising along until the 5th inning when Chase Shelton (Charleston Southern) led off the inning with a single to center, Erik Barber (UCF) sacrificed Shelton over to second, then Julian Santos (Bethune-Cookman) hit an RBI-triple down the first base line. Then Tyler Lancaster singled to right to score Santos and Lancaster would come around to score on the RBI single by Michael Bell (Georgia). The inning would end with Allen Staton flying out to second base but the damage had been done as nine Blowfish batters came to the plate.
The Blowfish bats stayed hot as they brought another eight men to the plate and once again Shelton started things off with a leadoff walk. Brandon Burris (Spartanburg Methodist) would come in to pitch run for Shelton and steal two bases. Barber followed Shelton with a walk of his own and then Julian Santos would add his second RBI of the ball game by sacrificing to right field. Later in the inning Tommy Mirrabelli (Kansas) would hit a ground rule double to bring in Jake Welch (Bethune-Cookman).
Blowfish pitcher Cody Dix (Frances Marion) came on in relief in the sixth inning and threw two shutout innings to close the door on the RedWolves in the first game.
In game two of the double header relief pitcher Colie Bowers (College of Charleston) got the start and had a strong outing throwing 6 shutout innings, only allowed 4 hits, and had 4 strikeouts as well.
The Blowfish bats stayed hot as Brandon Burris (Spartanburg Methodist) had a bunt single and then advanced on a throwing error to second, Burris then stole third base, and JD Crowe (Francis Marion) sacrificed to right to score Burris in the bottom of the third.
In the bottom of the fourth Allen Staton (North Greenville) added run support by homering over the left field fence.
The Florence RedWolves would try and make it interesting in the top of the seventh when Kane Sweeney doubled to center and would later come around to score on an RBI single by Conor Sullivan (Ave Maria).
Denis Buckley (Charleston Southern) came in and shut the door with two men on base to pick up the save.
The next home game for the Columbia Blowfish will be a double header against the Forest City Owls tomorrow night.
