Wilmington Sharks News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - When SwampDogs starting pitcher Jordy Farthing struck out four batters in the first inning, you could sense it was going to be a special night at The Swamp. ÃÂ The SwampDogs pitching staff combined to strike out 18 Wilmington Sharks batters en route to a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night.
Farthing was magnificent, going 5.2 innings, striking out 12 batters while walking none and allowing three unearned runs. ÃÂ The 12 strikeouts for Farthing are the most by a single pitcher in the Coastal Plain League this season - the previous high was 11 by Gastonia's Jared Cheek. ÃÂ As a staff, the SwampDogs amassed 18 strikeouts, setting another CPL season high for strikeouts in one game by a team.
Fayetteville picked up the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, and added three more in the fourth. Down 4-0, Wilmington wasn't going down quietly.
The Sharks would chase Farthing after he allowed three unearned runs in the sixth. Linkous led off the frame by reaching on an error, followed by an Alex Raburn single to center field. The coveted double steal was well executed, putting runners on second and third for Nate Moorhouse. Moorhouse put the pitch back where it came from, scoring two on the play. Cam McRae added the third run of the inning, bringing Moorhouse in on a single to left field. McRae finished the evening 3-4 with 1 RBI.
Farthing was made a winner for the first time this season, and is now 1-2 with a 1.57 ERA, while Parke gets tagged with the loss, falling to 0-1. ÃÂ Hartman was credited with a save, his first on the season.
The Sharks are on the road again Wednesday evening for a date with the Marlins in Morehead City, before a rematch with the Marlins at the Shark Tank on Thursday for "Opening Day Part 2", complete with live music from local favorites Massive Grass and dollar draft beers.
