
SwampDogs Staff Records Another Double Digit Strikeout Game

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.- The SwampDogs dropped an exibition game to the Catawba Valley Stars 8-1 Wednesday night.
Clayton Freimuth got the start and went the first 3.0+ innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits, walking two and striking out two. He was relieved with no outs in the fourth by Will Bacon, who struck out four and didn't allow a hit in two innings of work. SwampDogs pitchers would strike out 11 Stars on the night.
The offense couldn't find the gaps making solid contact, but often finding the balls either heading right for Stars gloves, or having highlight reel-caliber catches made against them.
They finally did crack through with a run in the sixth inning, whend Chase Edwards singled, then advanced to secod and third on two Sam Larson wild pitches. He would eventually come into score on an infield single by Brandon Metoyer.
The Stars would add insurance runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth against four different SwampDogs relievers, and would cruise to the victory.
The winner was Matt Pope, Clayton Freimuth took the loss.
The 'Dogs will be back at it Thursday night as they finish off their three game homestand against the Martinsville Mustangs at 7:05 pm. For tickets and more information, call 426-5900.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 1,200 alumni drafted and 68 of those - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut; while another notable alum - Russell Wilson - won Super Bowl XLVIII.
