Green Bay Blizzard News Release
It's Mother's Day Weekend, and the Green Bay Blizzard is honoring moms with special "Ladies Night" events at this Saturday's game as the team welcomes back one of the key players from last season's playoff squad.
As the Green Bay Blizzard heads into a stretch of playing 3 out of 4 games at home, they look to recover from a 2-4 start that was the result of a brutal 4-of-6 games on the road to start the 2006 season. Not a moment too soon, the team welcomes back their leading receiver from 2005, OS Brent Holmes.
Holmes (5-11, 170 Texas A&M Kingsville), who was an integral part of the 2005 squad that posted the franchise's first-ever winning record and playoff berth, joins the team mid-season after finishing up his degree at Texas A&M Kingsville. Despite losing 3 games to injury last year, Holmes led the Blizzard in numerous categories, including:
- Receptions (64)
- Receiving yards (857)
- Receiving TDs (14)
- Kick returns (32)
- Kick return yards (767)
- Kick return average (24.0)
- Kick return TDs (3)
- All-purpose yards (1,805)
Blizzard Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator Mark Stoute is thrilled to have Holmes back in the fold. "This is just what the doctor ordered," said Stoute. "[Holmes] could be the spark we need to turn this thing around. He's got a rare blend of speed, skill and smarts, and he's going to be a big help to the younger guys."
The Blizzard has struggled on offense this season as the team has tried to find a rhythm. The team settled on AFL veteran Ronnie Gordon as QB, and though they were shut out in the 2nd half of last week's loss at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, things are looking up. "We had a great week of practice," said Stoute. "Things are starting to come together for these guys, and we're going to make the most of this home stand. Getting Holmes back just makes us that much more dangerous."
Holmes will return to the field tomorrow night, Saturday, May 13th against the Macon Knights (2-3). The game will be an event on a number of fronts. First, the Blizzard is holding the 1st Annual Blizzard Dodgeball Tournament, presented by The Watering Hole. A 12-team tournament, matches will go from Noon-4:00pm, and the Championship Match will take place on the field at halftime. The tournament is free to attend, but fans must present their ticket to the game for entry.
Next, in honor of Mother's Day, it's "Ladies Night," and fans will be treated to a unique halftime performance by Frank of Frank's Dinner Theater, who will be performing in character - as Cher. Frank appeared at a Blizzard game last season as Elvis Presley, and looks to top that raucous performance by channeling the lovely and talented Cher.
With the weather bordering on wintry conditions, it perfect weather for the Blizzard! It's Ladies Night, presented by St. Mary's Hospital A Woman's Place, and fans are encouraged to bring mom out to the game. Fans will receive green and silver Blizzard wrist pom-pons as they enter the Resch Center.
