THE STAKES: Quad City is looking to get back into the playoff hunt with a victory over the Louisville Fire. A home loss would ensure that the best Quad City could finish at home this season would be .500.
THE SERIES: The two rivals have met 9 times, with Quad City still stinging from a playoff loss at home to Louisville in 2004 when Quad City failed to recover the missed field goal attempt with no time remaining on the clock. Since the ball was still live, Louisville fell on it and won the game 53-48
THE IFs:
If Quad City defeats Louisville, it would ...
- Give it a 7-3 all-time record over the Coyotes
- Give the Steamwheelers a 2-4 record on the season
- Give Quad City its first home win of 2006.
- Snap a three-game home losing streak, the longest home losing streak in team history.

LAST SERIES MEETING
Quad City Steamwheelers @ Louisville
July 30, 2005
Freedom Hall
Fire 70, Steamwheelers 56
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Quad City Steamwheelers saw a 42-28 halftime advantage erased by an inspired Louisville Fire team en route to a 70-56 defeat on Saturday night at Freedom Hall. With the loss, the 'Wheelers saw their five-game winning streak snapped and slipped to fifth in the National Conference; meaning that they will travel to Texas for their first round playoff game next Sunday against Rio Grande Valley. Quad City finished the 2005 regular season at 9-7.
The Steamwheelers were perfect in the first half, scoring on all five of their possessions and added a sixth touchdown when Matt Forbes intercepted a Matt Sauk pass at the goal line and took it 50 yards for a touchdown. The interception was the ninth of the year for Forbes, tying a career-high and the fourth that he had taken back for a touchdown.
However, the Fire were just as, if not more lethal in the second half, scoring each time they touched the football and stopping Quad City three times, once on a turnover on downs and twice on an interception while also recovering an onsides kick in the third quarter which allowed them to take their first lead of the game at 56-49.
Travis Burns was the Steamwheelers offensive star on the night, pulling in all three of Sam Clemons' passing touchdowns while also adding a rushing score of his own. He finished the game with 220 yards of total offense including 10 catches for 120 yards.
Adding to the offense was Clemons who, in addition to throwing for 217 yards and three scores, added a season-high three rushing scores, giving him 13 on the season.
But those two could not stop Sauk and Co., especially in the second half. The Louisville quarterback, who broke former Quad City signal caller Tony Zimmerman's touchdowns thrown in a single season record midway through the second quarter with his 94th TD pass of the year, finished the game with eight touchdown passes and just the one interception to lead his squad to its 11th win of the year and assured itself of the No. 3 seed in the American Conference and a first round game against Macon.
Louisville took control in the third quarter by outscoring Quad City 28-7, due to the onsides kick recovery and an interception.
The Fire were just as dominating in the fourth, outscoring the 'Wheelers 14-7 while forcing a pair of crucial stops. Louisville clinched the game when Clemons was picked off for the second time late in the quarter as he threw a desperation pass deep down field.
LAST GAME RESET
Quad City Steamwheelers @ Central Valley Coyotes

Coyotes 52, Steamwheelers 59 (OT)
(Fresno, Calif.) - The Quad City Steamwheelers notched their first victory of the season and 75th all-time regular season victory with a 59-52 overtime victory over the Central Valley Coyotes on Saturday evening.
On third and one in overtime, with the ball sitting on the one yard line, quarterback Tim Hicks followed fullback Jeff Macrea into the end zone on a quarterback sneak to give the Steamwheelers a 59-52 lead. Quad City improved to 1-4 after holding the Coyotes to a four and out on the final Central Valley drive.
Things did not look good for the Steamwheelers as Hicks threw the only interception of the game when Maurice Taylor picked off a deep pass that was intended for Tim Dodge in the third quarter. The interception proved to be costly as it setup a James Lewis touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone giving the Coyotes a 45-32 lead.
After the two teams traded scores to start the fourth quarter and with the Steamwheelers trailing 52-38, Jack Walker Jr. would make two big plays to help Quad City get back into the game. Walker Jr., who finished the night with 60 yards and three touchdown catches, caught an 11-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone to pull Quad City to within seven at 52-45. Quad City would try their second onside kick of the night and this time Kimo Naehu placed it perfectly and Walker came up with it setting up 15-yard touchdown pass by Kris Peters with 3:07 remaining in the game and the score tied at 52 all.
On the ensuing kickoff, Naehu would hit the scoreboard giving the Coyotes the ball at the 20 yard line and a chance to win the game. After forcing the Steamwheelers to use all their timeouts and with one second remaining on the clock John Gockman, who made a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter, would line up to attempt the game-winning kick. The snap was high and Gockman was forced to jump on the football and send the game to overtime.
Reggie Perkins would lead Quad City defensively registering 7.5 tackles and four pass breakups. For the Coyotes Daniel Jones would notch seven total tackles.
