Green Bay Blizzard News Release

After a huge win on the road Saturday night over the Arkansas Twisters, the Green Bay Blizzard returns home this week tied for the Division lead with a record of 4–1.

WR/LB Robert Garth enjoyed a career night, leading the Blizzard to a 48-35 victory over the reeling (0-5) Twisters in front of a crowd of 6,921 at Alltel Arena. Garth accounted for five of the seven Blizzard TDs on the night, including 4 TD receptions and an INT return.

Defense was once again the name of the game, as the Blizzard would score their first two TDs on turnovers, in a game in which they would never trail. FB/LB Matt Huebner started things off midway through the first quarter by recovering a Twisters fumble in the end zone, giving the Blizzard a 7-0 lead. Garth would get on the board less than a minute later, returning an INT off of Twisters QB Travis Motley 15 yards for a TD.

The Twisters were game, scoring two TDs of their own on TD passes from Motley to FB/LB Loren Jackson and WR/DB Ted Alford, but a missed PAT by K Coy Nance following the latter would leave the score 14-13 in favor of the Blizzard.

From then on, it was the Robert Garth show. Garth would score the next three TDs on passes from QB Johnny Turman of 34, 7, and 7 yards. The sequence of scoring would give the Blizzard a 21-13 halftime lead that grew to 34-13 going into the fourth quarter.

The Twisters finally got back on the scoreboard just over two minutes into the final period when Motley found Alford from 3 yards out to make the score 34-19. But Turman and Garth would strike again, this time from 16 yards out for a 41-19 lead.

The Twisters made a game of it late, as Motley would hook up with WR/DB Kevin Williams for an 8-yard TD pass. Motley would then find OS Kevin Whitley for the successful 2-point conversion, which would bring the Twisters to within 14 points at 41-27.

But the Blizzard proved to be too much, as Turman launched a 30-yard TD pass to WR/DB Brent Holmes for Turman's fifth TD pass of the night and a 48-27 Blizzard lead.

The scoring would be closed out by the Twisters, as OS Robert Kilow would take the ensuing kickoff 56 yards to the house. Another successful 2-point conversion pass from Motley to Whitley would bring the score to 48-35 in favor of the visiting Blizzard.

Game awards were swept by the Blizzard: Huebner was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game, and to no one's surprise Garth was honored as U.S. Army Ironman of the Game and Offensive Player of the Game.

The victory improved the Blizzard to 4-1, including the first-ever 3-game winning streak in franchise history. It also placed the team in a 3-way tie for first place in the af2's American Conference Eastern Division, with the Manchester Wolves and the Louisville Fire.

The Blizzard returns home this Saturday, May 14th to take on the Fire at 7:00pm at the Resch Center. It is Oneida Casino "Old School Football Night," and the first 1,000 fans age 21 and over will receive a free old-school replica leather football helmet, courtesy of Oneida Casino.
