Lake County Fielders News Release

Yuma, Arizona -June 3, 2011 - The Lake County Fielders forged ahead in the 2011 season with a 4-1 victory in the series opener against the Yuma Scorpions on Friday night.

The Fielders continued to pounce their opponents by taking an early lead. Shortstop Rex Rundgren hit a one-out double in the top of the 1st inning and came home on centerfielder Lino Garcia's RBI single to left field. It carried over in the 2nd inning when third baseman Patrick Brooks reached base on an error by his counterpart, Yuma third baseman Jared McDonald. A balk by Yuma's starting pitcher Andrew Romo (0-2) moved Brooks into scoring position. Two batters later, second baseman Brandon Newton's RBI single scored Brooks, giving the Fielders a 2-0 lead.

That was plenty enough for Fielders starting pitcher Dan Blewett to work with for the rest of the game. Blewett (1-0) was dominant in his seven-inning outing, allowing just one unearned run on seven hits, striking out a pair and walking one. Blewett had a stretch from the 4th inning until the 7th inning, where he retired 11 of 12 batters in a row.

Even when Blewett exited the game, the Fielders' bats ensured that Blewett would leave with the win to his name. Right fielder Quentin Luquette's one-out single and catcher Joe Dempsey's two-out single put two runners on base with two outs for Newton. Newton would line a 2-2 pitch off the leg of Yuma reliever Chris Britton, with the ball rolling its way into right field. The odd-looking double brought home both Luquette and Dempsey, not only giving Newton 3 RBIs for the night, but the Fielders a 4-1 lead.

It was an easy night for the Fielders bullpen, too. Ben Paxton survived a shaky bottom of the 8th inning when he had runners at first and second with two outs to get out of the jam. Closer/pitching coach Chris Thompson shut the door in the bottom of the 9th to earn his fourth save of the season, allowing just one hit in his inning of work.

The second game of the series takes place on Saturday night from Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, AZ, when lefty Zac Cline takes the hill for the Fielders. The first pitch for all of the games in the series is scheduled for 7:35pm local time (9:35pm central). You can listen to the game on 1220 AM WKRS or online at fieldersbaseball.com or wkrs.com.
