Roadrunners Rally But Lose Late To \'Wings

HARLINGEN, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners rallied after trailing by four runs but a late run by the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings sent them to their fifth straight loss Saturday night at Harlingen Field with a score of 5-4.

After trailing 4-0, Edinburg rallied back to tie the game at four but RGV got the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch.

The WhiteWings (8-3) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second when Brandon Decker hit a two-run single that allowed Francisco Hernandez and David Peralta to score giving RGV the 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Leivi Ventura hit a two-run home run off of Edinburg starter Ryan Harris (1-2) extending the WhiteWings lead 4-0.

The Roadrunners (3-8) got on the board in the top of the fourth when a fielding error allowed Stantrel Smith to score cutting into RGV's lead 4-1.

Jason Thomas led off the top of the fifth with a single and then went to second after a sacrifice bunt by Adam Gordon. Michael Lewis then reached on a passed ball strike out but the throw got away from the catcher that allowed Gordon to score from third cutting the WhiteWings lead in half 4-2.

Edinburg tied the game up in the top of the sixth inning against RGV reliever Andrew Dowl (1-0). Osiel Flores led the inning off with a walk and then stole second base. Stantrel Smith followed with an infield single that put runners on first and third. A fielding error by left fielder David Peralta allowed Flores to score from third. C.J. Beatty then hit an RBI single to right field that allowed Smith to score from second which tied the game at four.

RGV regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh when a wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed Brandon Decker to score from third making it a 5-4 ball game.

Edgar Martinez pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save giving the WhiteWings the 5-4 victory.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the final game of their four-game series Sunday night at Harlingen Field. Corey Goudeau (0-2) is expected to face Andrew Wells (2-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
