Stockton Ports News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Stockton Ports saw their season-long losing streak balloon to nine games on Thursday night, and it happened in shutout fashion. The Bakersfield Blaze scored two runs in the third inning and it proved to be enough as Stockton mustered just three hits and was shut out for the fourth time on the season, this time by a final of 2-0 to open a four-game set at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Stockton wasted a one-out double by Melvin Mercedes in the first and had two on with nobody out in the third, but hit into an inning-ending double-play. Those two situations would prove to be Stockton's best scoring chances of the night.
Ports starter Casey Meisner (0-10) set the side down in order in the first and pitched around a walk and a single in the second. In the third, however, Meisner's command would get dicey and he issued four free passes in the inning. After a leadoff walk, a fielder's choice groundout and a caught stealing, Meisner had the bases empty with two outs. He then issued back-to-back walks and gave up a single to Austin Wilson that scored the first run of the ballgame. Jay Baum followed with a check-swing RBI single to right to make it a 2-0 Blaze advantage.
Meisner pitched through the fourth inning but went on to suffer his 10th straight loss, allowing two runs on five hits while walking a career-high five and striking out two.
Blaze starter Eddie Campbell (6-4), after issuing a leadoff walk in the fourth inning, would retire 11 batters in-a-row to take him two outs deep into the seventh. Campbell would pitch through the eighth inning and turn in his best performance of the season as he allowed just two hits while walking four and striking out eight, which matched a season-high.
Jacob Zokan (SV, 1) entered the game to pitch the ninth and pitched around a one-out fielding error and an ensuing single to preserve the shutout and earn his first save of the season.
Joey Wagman tossed three scoreless innings while striking out four in relief of Meisner. Cody Stull set the side down in order in the eighth, his lone inning of work.
The Ports and Blaze play the second game of their four-game set on Friday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Left-hander Zack Erwin (2-6, 5.16 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Bakersfield right-hander Lukas Schiraldi (0-2, 10.24 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:45 p.m. PDT.
