Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The 1978 Bakersfield Outlaws would have been proud. In front of a stadium clad in throwback jerseys, Eddie Campbell blitzed the Stockton Ports with 8.0 shutout innings, and the Bakersfield Blaze won the club's ninth straight game, 2-0, on Thursday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The only runs of the game came in the home half of the 3rd inning. With Ports starter Casey Meisner (L, 0-10) on the hill, a bout of wildness set up a Blaze two-out rally. Four walks gave the Blaze a chance, and Austin Wilson's infield single plated the only run Bakersfield would need. Jay Baum followed with a check-swing single to plate a second, and that would be that.

From a pitching standpoint, Campbell helped his own cause early, making a remarkable catch on a liner right back at him, saving a run in the process. And in the visiting portion of that pivotal 3rd inning, Eddie induced an inning-ending double play with runners at the corners and only one out, preserving the scoreless tie.

After that grounder, Eddie was not challenged. The Ports did not have another hit off Campbell, who at one point retired 11 batters in a row before surrendering a 7th-inning walk. In all, Campbell struck out eight and walked four in his longest effort of the season.

In the 9th, Jake Zokan (S,1) took over, working around an error and a single to record his first professional save and net the Blaze win number nine in a row.

The Blaze will try to keep streaking tomorrow in another 7:45pm start as Lukas Schiraldi toes the slab. It's TGI Friday at the yard, featuring player autograph sessions and discounted beers and snacks through the 4th inning.

Can't make it? Dan Besbris will have the call of all Blaze action at BakersfieldBlaze.com and via TuneIn Radio.
