San Jose Giants News Release
MODESTO, CA - Chris Shaw homered as part of a five-RBI game and Mark Reyes pitched into the ninth inning in a 7-2 San Jose Giants victory over the Modesto Nuts on Thursday evening at John Thurman Field. Shaw's two-out, two-RBI single in the top of the seventh broke a scoreless tie before the All-Star added a three-run homer in the ninth. The series-opening win snapped San Jose's (34-25) four-game losing streak.
Reyes (5-1) worked a career-high 8 2/3 innings with two runs (both earned) and seven hits allowed to pick-up the win. The left-hander, who took a shutout into the eighth, walked three and struck out six during his 102-pitch performance.
Shaw (2-for-5, HR, 5 RBI) hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season and became the first Giants player this year to drive in five runs in a single game. Jonah Arenado (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Ty Ross (2-for-4) added two hits apiece for San Jose.
Reyes and Modesto's Carlos Polanco locked up in a pitchers' duel as neither team scored over the first six innings. San Jose mustered five hits over the first six frames, but left seven runners on base, including two each in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Meanwhile, Reyes yielded just four singles over the opening six innings. In the bottom of the sixth, the Nuts had a chance to crack the scoreboard as Omar Carrizales walked with one out before Wes Rogers singled to put runners on the corners. Reyes though induced the next hitter, Shane Hoelscher, to ground into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play to keep the game scoreless.
The Giants then erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh to take control of the game. Ross started the inning with a single before Robbie Garvey walked on four pitches. Helmis Rodriguez was then summoned from the bullpen to replace Polanco, but he promptly walked Ronnie Jebavy on four pitches as well to load the bases with none out. Rodriguez though recovered with consecutive three-pitch strikeouts of Steven Duggar and C.J Hinojosa for the first two outs of the inning as the bases remained loaded. Shaw was up next and he quickly fell behind in the count, but took an 0-2 pitch from Rodriguez and grounded a sharp single up the middle to plate both Ross and Garvey with the first two runs of the contest. The rally then continued when Arenado belted a double off the left field fence scoring two more runs for a 4-0 San Jose cushion.
Reyes returned to the mound for the bottom of the seventh and worked around a two-out error to maintain the shutout. Modesto's Forrest Wall though led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to right center. The homer, Wall's third of the season, trimmed the Giants lead to 4-1. Three batters later, Rogers doubled down the left field line with two outs, but Reyes came back to retire Hoelscher on a groundout to end the inning.
In the top of the ninth, Duggar reached base on a two-out error to start a run-scoring rally. Hinojosa followed with a single to put runners on the corners and then Shaw stepped to the plate and launched a 2-0 pitch over the fence in right center. The three-run homer extended the San Jose lead to 7-1.
Reyes sat at 88 pitches through eight innings, so the Giants starter was sent back out for the bottom of the ninth. Reyes promptly walked Drew Weeks to begin the inning, but then struck out the next two hitters. Max White though followed with an RBI double into right center field gap bringing Modesto to within 7-2. With Reyes' pitch count over 100, he was removed from the game and replaced by Dusten Knight, who retired Wall on a fly out to left to end the game.
Reyes' 8 2/3 innings pitched is the longest outing by a San Jose starter this season.
Polanco (1-5) suffered the loss after he was charged with two runs (both earned) on six hits over six-plus innings of work. The right-hander walked two and struck out a season-high 10.
