Blast selects five players in MISL Amateur Draft

Baltimore, MD – The Baltimore Blast selected five college players in today's MISL Amateur Draft. The Blast chose Derek McElligott, a Baltimore native and UMBC forward, in the Territorial Round of the Draft. The Blast had the seventh selection in each of the draft's five rounds.

McElligott, a graduate of Greater Grace Christian Academy, recorded 106 points in four seasons at UMBC. The 5-8, 155-pound Baltimore native started all 17 games for the Retrievers in his senior year and recorded eight goals and three assists for 19 points. He was named to the 2004 NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Team Third Team this year, the third consecutive time he was honored by the NSCAA.

"The Amateur Draft has been very important to the success of our franchise," said Blast General Manager Kevin Healey. "I have high hopes for this year's draft selections."

Baltimore chose Matt Oliver from the University of Virginia in the first round. Oliver, a defender out of DeMatha High School was a 2004 Second Team NSCAA All-American and First Team All-South Atlantic Region selection. He recorded 13 points (six goals and one assist) for the Cavaliers last season. In the second round, Baltimore chose Steve Fell, a defender from Towson University. Fell, a 2004 Second Team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, was a four-year starter and a two-year Co-Captain for the Tigers. As a defender, Fell recorded five goals and two assists in 66 games played during his college career.

The Blast selected Kevon Harris from Old Dominion University and Noah Palmer from the University of Maryland, respectively, in the third and fourth rounds of the draft. Harris, a midfielder from Kingston, Jamaica, was named First Team All-CAA and First Team All-South Atlantic at the completion of his senior season. He led the Monarchs in scoring with 19 points last season and helped the team to its first NCAA Tournament seeding in school history. Palmer, a 2004 Second Team All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament selection was also selected by Real Salt Lake in the MLS Supplemental Draft.

The five-round Major Indoor Soccer League Amateur Draft was held this afternoon via conference call. The draft consisted of one territorial round and four standard rounds of selections. Draft order, based on each team's win percentage from their last completed regular season, was as follows: California Cougars, Chicago Storm, St. Louis Steamers, Cleveland Force, Kansas City Comets, Philadelphia KiXX, Baltimore Blast and Milwaukee Wave.
