Saskatoon Blades News Release

SASKATOON - The Saskatoon Blades are honoured to announce a new partnership to Welcome the World at the Blades game this Sunday, November 1. The Blades are teaming up with the Saskatoon Open Door Society and Canadian Tire to bring newcomers to SaskTel Centre to learn about the game Canadians love.

"The Saskatoon Open Door Society is very excited to be partnering with the Blades to Welcome the World! This is an excellent opportunity to introduce our newcomer clients to the sport of hockey, which is such an important part of the Canadian culture," says Ashraf Mir, the co-acting executive director of the Society.

The newcomers will arrive at SaskTel Centre early for Hockey 101, an introduction to the game, where they will learn the rules, try on gear, shoot a puck and listen to a pre-game chalk talk from Blades GM & Head Coach Bob Woods. Then, as they watch the Blades battle the Victoria Royals, they can also watch the jumbotron to learn more about hockey. The big board will also feature facts about newcomers so everyone can gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the value the newcomers bring to our community. Finally, after the game, the newcomers can try skating for the first time in their lives!

"Hockey is a common bond we share growing up in Canada. We feel coming to watch the sport live is a great way for newcomers to learn about the game we love and, in the process, help them feel like they're a part of the community," adds Steve Hogle, president of the Saskatoon Blades. "We want to also use this opportunity to show everyone how fortunate we are to have these newcomers choose Saskatoon as their new home. "

The newcomers will enjoy complimentary bus service to SaskTel Centre Sunday, where they will be welcomed to the game as guests of the partners.

"Canadian Tire is an institution in Canada, as is hockey and the Blades here in Saskatoon. We are thrilled to be part of something that pulls all these elements together and enables newcomers to our city experience this," says Dave Deplaedt, owner of one of the two Canadian Tire stores in Saskatoon.

Puck drop is at 2pm Sunday. Come help Welcome the World when the Blades take on the Victoria Royals!
