Saskatoon Blades News Release
The Saskatoon Blades opened up a 5-0 lead and never looked back, beating the Medicine Hat Tigers 7-2 at Credit Union Centre on Tuesday night.
Sam Klassen (Watrous, SK) and Stefan Elliott (North Vancouver, BC) both had three point nights, while Jyri Niemi (Hameenkyro, Finland), Jeremy Boyer (Saskatoon, SK), and Charles Inglis (Saskatoon, SK) each had two points to lead the Blades to the victory.
Curtis Hamilton (Kelowna, BC) opened the scoring at the 7:17 mark of the first period. The third-year Blade carried the puck out of his zone down the left side deep into the Medicine Hat end and from a bad angle managed to squeeze the puck past Tigers' starting goaltender Tyler Bunz.
Boyer put the Blades up 2-0 just before the end of the first period. Elliott took the original shot from the right point and the rebound found its way to Boyer, who was at the top of the crease and slid it into the Tigers' net.
The Blades went up 3-0 early in the second period on a great individual effort by Inglis. The sophomore forward grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone, moved into the Tigers' end on his off-wing, and wired a shot stick side for his third of the season.
The hometown squad grabbed a 4-0 lead just over two minutes later off the stick of veteran forward Gaelan Patterson (Saskatoon, SK). Elliott again held the puck at the right point and after a couple tries managed to get a shot on net. The rebound bounced right onto the stick of Patterson, who deposited his sixth on the campaign.
Walker Wintoneak (Flin Flon, MB) put the Blades up 5-0 at the 14:31 mark of the second period for his seventh of the season. The overage forward entered the Tigers' zone and took a shot from just inside the blue line that was stopped. The puck remained in the Tigers' crease and a keen Wintoneak was able to move untouched into the crease, chipping the loose puck into the Tigers' net.
Overage forward Bretton Cameron put the Tigers on the board before the middle frame was over after putting home a rebound in front of the Blades' net.
Blades' defenseman Klassen picked up his third of the season at 10:02 of the third period when his wrist shot from the point managed to find its way through a screen to the back of the Medicine Hat net.
Cameron recorded his second of the game two and a half minutes later on a one-timer that found its way past Blades' goaltender Adam Morrison (White Rock, BC).
The Blades closed out the scoring on a 4-on-4 with five minutes remaining. Teigan Zahn (Bethune, SK) carried the puck into the Tigers' zone on a 3-on-2 rush and fed a trailing Derek Hulak (Saskatoon, SK), who put home his seventh on the season high glove side.
Final score Saskatoon 7, Medicine Hat 2.
Morrison took the win between the pipes for the Blades, stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced. At the other end, starting goaltender Bunz surrendered 4 goals on 16 shots to take the loss, while Deven Dubyk entered in relief and gave up 3 goals on 32 shots sent his way.
With the win, the Blades improve to a 10-3-0-2 record on the season good enough for 22 points. The Tigers, meanwhile, fall to 8-4-2-2 for 18 points.
The Blades are next in action this Friday when the Edmonton Oil Kings make their second and final visit of the season to Credit Union Centre. Game time is 7:05 pm. Tickets are available online at ticketmaster.ca , by calling 938-7800, or by visiting any Ticketmaster location.
