Blades Pick up Single Point in Kamloops

The Saskatoon Blades earned a single point on Friday night in a 3-2 overtime loss in Kamloops. Now at 16-9-3-0 on the season, the Blades will wrap up their B.C. Division road trip Saturday night in Kelowna agains the Rockets.

HOW IT WENT DOWN

The Blades got out to a slow start on Friday surviving a scoreless first period thanks to the performance of Nolan Maier. Kamloops took an 11-6 lead on the shot clock into the first intermission.

A better second period was on deck as Emil Malysjev opened the scoring with his first career WHL goal. Dawson Davidson and Kristian Roykas-Marthinsen had the assists. Max Gerlach increased the lead to 2-0 as he jammed in his team leading 17th goal of the season on the power play. Former Blazers Dawson Davidson and Nolan Kneen added the helpers. Kamloops did manage to get on the board before the second intermission thanks to a deflection from captain Jermaine Loewen. The Blades outshot Kamloops 13-9 in the period.

Connor Zary then tied it for the Blazers midway through the second period with a breakaway, low-blocker shot to beat Maier. Saskatoon failed to muster any shots in overtime and then Quinn Schmiemann ended it 1:29 into the extra frame.

The Blades finished 1/3 on the man advantage and a perfect 3/3 on the penalty kill. Nolan Maier made 26 saves on 29 shots and was named the 3rd star of the game.

TURNING POINT

The game tying goal in the third period for Kamloops from Connor Zary gave the Blazers enough life to force overtime and eventually earn the victory.

TOP PERFORMERS

Nolan Maier gave his team a chance with a 26 save performance.

Dawson Davidson had 2 assists in his return to Kamloops.

Dylan Garand made 23 saves in goal for the Blazers to hold off the Blades offense.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

Emil Malysjev scored his 1st career WHL goal.

Nolan Kneen picked up his first assist as a Blade against his former team.

Chase Wouters went 12/20 in the face-off circle.

UNSUNG HERO

Riley McKay dropped the gloves with Jermaine Loewen at the start of the 2nd period despite giving up 5 inches and 30lbs in the size department.

UP NEXT

The Blades head to Kelowna for their final stop in B.C. to take on the Rockets Saturday night. Next home action for the Blades goes on Friday, Dec. 9th at 7:00pm versus the Moose Jaw Warriors.
