Saskatoon Blades News Release
Saskatoon, SK - The Saskatoon Blades are champions of the East Division for the first time since the 2012-13 Western Hockey League (WHL) season.
Goalie Austin Elliott's 18-save shutout in Tuesday's 4-0 win against the Brandon Wheat Kings at SaskTel Centre earned the Bridge City Bunch their 11th East Division banner in franchise history.
The Blades also clinched first place in the Eastern Conference and remain first in the WHL with a 46-12-2-3 record. With five games remaining on their schedule, the magic number for the Blades to win the Scotty Munro Trophy for best regular season team in the league is seven (either points earned by the Blades or points lost by the Portland Winterhawks). If the Blades claim top spot in the WHL, it will be the seventh time in their history. Saskatoon can also reach 50 wins in a season for the first time since the 2010-11 team that went 56-13-1-2.
This weekend features a home-and-home series against another beast in the east, the Moose Jaw Warriors. Saskatoon welcomes the Warriors on Friday at SaskTel Centre, followed up by the rematch in Moose Jaw the next night.
Puck drop for both games is 7:00pm CT.
