Rockford IceHogs News Release
The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have agreed to terms with forward Brandon Hagel on a three-year contract that runs through the 2023-24 season ($1,500,000 salary cap hit).
"Brandon's ascension to a regular role last season provided a huge boost to our team," said President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Stan Bowman. "We were quite pleased with the growth he showed in his game and ability to handle tougher assignments. His continued development at this level will allow him to be a valuable contributor to our offense moving forward."
Hagel, 22, recorded 24 points (9G, 15A) in 52 contests as a rookie during the 2020-21 season with Chicago. His 15 assists ranked fourth on the Blackhawks and seventh among NHL rookies while his 24 points ranked fifth on the club and ninth among NHL first-year skaters.
A native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Hagel helped Team Canada win a gold medal at the 2021 IIHF World Championship, skating in 10 games during the tournament.
The 5-foot-11, 174-pound forward notched his first career National Hockey League point (1A) on Jan. 27, 2021 against the Nashville Predators and scored his first NHL goal on Feb. 23, 2021 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Hagel registered a career-high three points (1G, 2A), including the overtime game-winning goal, on April 21, 2021 vs. Nashville.
Originally drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the sixth round (159th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft, Hagel made his NHL debut with Chicago during the 2019-20 season on March 11, 2020 vs. the San Jose Sharks. He also skated in 59 games with the American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs during the 2019-20 season, tallying 31 points (19G, 12A). His 19 goals paced the IceHogs and shared sixth among AHL rookies.
