Black Hawks Turn to Browns

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - Connor Brown and Caden Brown have contributed to the Waterloo Black Hawks' 2022/23 success as forwards, and now Garrett Brown will add veteran presence to the team's blue line during the last two months of the USHL regular season, plus the playoffs beyond.
On Tuesday, the Hawks announced a trade to acquire Garrett Brown from the Sioux City Musketeers in exchange for forward Grayson Badger. None of Waterloo's Browns are closely related: Garrett hails from northern California, Connor from Florida, and Caden from St. Louis.
"Garrett won a Clark Cup last season with Sioux City, and we felt like his experience would provide a ton of value for our group down the stretch," said Black Hawks General Manager Bryn Chyzyk. "We are excited to welcome Garrett to Waterloo."
During last spring's Clark Cup playoffs, Brown played in all 10 Sioux City games, notching one assist and generating a +3 plus/minus differential. As a USHL rookie during the 2021/22 regular season, the 6-2, 195-pound defenseman did not miss a game. He scored four times, assisting on a dozen other goals, and was +9. His first goal was against the Black Hawks on December 28, 2021.
So far this season, Brown has matched his 2021/22 point total in just 36 games, tallying three goals and 13 assists. He has three multipoint efforts, including his final game for Sioux City last Saturday, when he had a goal and an assist in a 4-2 loss against the Tri-City Storm.
Last summer, Brown was chosen by the Winnipeg Jets during the Fourth Round (99th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft. His addition gives the Hawks five active players who are NHL picks; Brown joins Sam Rinzel (Chicago), Emmett Croteau (Montreal), Miko Matikka (Arizona), and Nate Benoit (Minnesota). Matikka and Benoit have each been added via trades since mid-January. Like Benoit in early February, Brown's first game as a Black Hawk will be the 100th of his USHL career. Like Matikka, Brown is committed to the University of Denver.
The Black Hawks were 6-2-1 during February. With 59 points, Waterloo is currently eight points behind the Fargo Force for first place in the USHL Western Conference with 18 regular season games remaining.
The Hawks are on the road this weekend against Lincoln Saturday and Sioux City Sunday. Brown's first opportunity to play a home game for Waterloo at Young Arena will be Saturday, March 11th against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
