Berkshire Black Bears News Release
The Berkshire Black Bears came out swinging the bats in the final game of the 3-game series with the Elmira Pioneers, as they scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back. They scored two more in the top of the 4th, and beat the Pioneers 8-5.
In the first inning, P.J. Johnston led off with a double, and scored on a Kevin Forbes single. After Pete Paciorek flew out, Ryan Jones doubled home Forbes, and later scored on a towering homerun by Shane Hopper. Then with two outs in the 1st, and a Manny Crespo walk, Tito Cruz hit a two-run homerun to take an early 6-0 lead.
Elmira came right back in the bottom of the first. Cleatus Davidson led off with a double and scored on a Rafael Alvarez single. Brian Jones then doubled home Alvarez, and scored on a Ryan Lehr single to cut the lead to 6-3.
In the top of the fourth, the Black Bears got two runs back as Tito Cruz singled with one out, and was brought in by a Chris Briones homerun, his second in as many nights.
The Pioneers then got those two runs back in the bottom half of the 4th when Carlos Rosario doubled with one out and scored on a Mike Valdes single. After an error by Tito Cruz, Rolando Bello grounded out to the pitcher to score Valdes to make the score 8-5.
That was all the scoring for the night as the relief pitching was tremendous for both teams. Chris McGee came in for the Pioneers in the 5th inning and retired all 10 batters he faced. Eddie Aucoin was equally impressive as he retired all nine batters he faced in three innings of work.
Tony Harden picked up the win for the Black Bears, pitching 5 innings, giving up 5 runs on 9 hits. He struck out 3 and didn't walk a batter.
Matt Vincent dropped his record to 0-1 for Elmira. He went 4.2 innings giving up 8 runs on 9 hits. He struck out 3 and walked one.
Matt Baillie received the save for the second consecutive night in his one inning of work. He gave up one hit and struck out one.
The Black Bears improve their record to 8-12, while Elmira falls to 10-8.
Berkshire will be off on Thursday, and will be back in action Friday at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield as they host the North Shore Stars. The first pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
