Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, June 11-Newark Bears general manager Chris Bryan announced today that the club has sold the contract of right-handed pitcher Jose Lima to the Kansas City Royals organization. Lima has been assigned to triple-A Omaha in the Pacific Coast League.
"We gave Jose the opportunity to showcase his skills and he came through with flying colors," said Bryan. "We are very happy for Jose that he is another step closer to where he needs to be."
The 30 year-old Lima made eight starts for the Bears and posted a 6-1 record and a 2.33 ERA. He was leading the Atlantic League in strikeouts with 52, was tied for the league lead in victories with 6 and complete games with 2 and was second in innings pitched with 54.
"I really loved my time here in Newark," said Lima. "The organization was great to me and they gave me the chance to prove that I belong back in the major leagues. And the fans here in Newark are beautiful. They treated me so well and I will miss them."
"Most of all, I am excited to sign with Kansas City and, hopefully soon, to be a part of a major league rotation and take part in a pennant race with the Royals," Lima said.
Lima has appeared in 262 games at the big league level with the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros. In 1999 he was a National League all star, posting a 21-10 record and 187 strikeouts in 246.1 innings pitched.
