Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, N.J., June 11-Ben Candleria's solo home run to the opposite field off of Andy Hazlett in the 8th inning broke a 9-9 tie and propelled the Bridgeport Bluefish past the Newark Bears, 10-9, Wednesday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.

Candleria, who was 4-5 with the home run, his 3rd of the season, and 2 RBI in the game, just missed hitting a home run to right field one pitch before hitting his home run to left field. The home run stymied a Bears comeback from deficits of 6-0 and 9-2.

Hazlett (1-2) was the fourth of five pitchers for Newark in the game. Hazlett pitched two innings and struck out 3 batters. The only hit he allowed was Candleria's home run.

Former Pittsburgh Pirates and Montreal Expos left-hander Chris Peters made his first start for the Bears and lasted only two-plus innings. He allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits and walked five batters. In all Bears pitchers allowed a season-high 9 walks in the game.

Trailing 9-2 in the 4th inning the Bears rallied for four runs in the 4th and three in the 6th to pull even. Bryan Britt's two-run double was the big blow in the 4th and Michael Coleman's two-run home run, his first of the year, was the tying blow in the 6th inning. Britt was 2-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI; while Coleman went 3-5 with the home run and 3 RBI. Jason Torres and Mike Piercy each contributed a pair of hits to the Bears 12 hit attack.

After Newark tied the game Bridgeport relievers Bobby Chouinard and Mike Guilfoyle shut the door, retiring the final 9 batters in order to finish the game. Chouinard (2-2) earned the win with 2 perfect innings and Guilfoyle earned his league-leading 10th save, striking out two in the 9th inning.

Willis Otanez (2-5, RBI) and Oreste Marrero (1-5, 3 RBI) each hit home runs for the Bluefish, who had 13 hits.

The Bears and Bluefish will face one another again on Thursday evening at 7:05 PM at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium with Matt Wagner (3-1) pitching for the Bears and Alex Lantayo (4-2) going for the 'Fish.
