West Virginia Black Bears News Release

GRANVILLE, W.Va. - The West Virginia Black Bears fell to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 4-1, at Monongalia County Ballpark on Thursday evening in a game that was characterized by solid pitching on both sides. Black Bears' starter Nate Madej recorded 11 strikeouts in six innings pitched in the loss.

Madej began his hot start with two strikeouts in the top of the first. Scrappers' starter Matt Comnos struck out three in the bottom of the inning to keep both teams hitless through one.

In the top of the second, a balk from Madej allowed Scrappers' TJ Reeves to score and put Mahoning Valley on the board first. After the balk, Madej managed to strike out three to keep the damage at one run.

The deficit was quickly erased in the bottom of the third by a solo home run from Black Bears' Tyler Dellerman to tie the game.

The Bears' starter continued his dominant appearance through the fifth inning. Madej struck out three in the top of the fourth and two in the fifth to bring his strikeout total to 11.

Carson Lambert replaced Nate Madej to start the seventh. Lambert found himself in trouble early as Mahoning Valley had a successful four-hit inning. A two-RBI double from Bryan Burckel and an RBI single from D'Aires Davis put the Scrappers up 4-1 heading into the eighth.

After six hitless innings, the Bears finally recorded their third hit in the eighth when Ben McClain singled to right field. However, West Virginia could not turn the hit into a run and ended the inning scoreless.

Black Bears' John Bakke replaced Carson Lambert two-thirds into the top of the ninth. Bakke got the Black Bears out of a jam, but his efforts proved futile. West Virginia managed one hit in the home half of the inning but could not score. The Bears ended the game with a 4-1 loss.

A bright spot for the Black Bears, Nate Madej put in solid work through six innings pitched. Madej allowed just two hits, one earned run and recorded 11 strikeouts in his start.

West Virginia looks to take the series against the Scrappers on Friday evening at Monongalia County Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
