West Virginia Black Bears News Release

Granville, WV - The West Virginia Black Bears lost game two Saturday night, falling 5-4 to the Williamsport Crosscutters on Superhero Night in Granville.

As a part of their Superhero Night, the Black Bears wore limited edition jerseys that were auctioned off throughout the game to benefit the American Cancer Society. Cooper the Mascot and a variety of his superhero buddies were also scattered throughout Monongalia County Ballpark for photos and plenty of super-powered hijinks.

Pitcher Zach Spears got the start for West Virginia and had his second consecutive solid outing at home, giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out four in five innings of work.

A first inning RBI single from Williamsport gave the Crosscutters an early 1-0 lead, and a pair of runs in the fifth built the lead to 3-0.

The Black Bears offense finally snapped out of a slow start in the bottom of the sixth when RF Brett Kinneman walked with two-outs and scored on a passed ball to bring it within 3-1.

3B Ben Bengtson carried that momentum into the seventh, roping a two-out triple into the left field gap, then scoring on an RBI double from SS Kyle Watson. The RBI was Watson's first with the Black Bears.

It was once again Kinneman and Bengtson coming through with two-outs in the bottom half of the eighth for West Virginia. Kinneman benefited from another passed ball to tie the ballgame before Bengtson drove home CF Fabricio Macias with an RBI single to give the Black Bears a 4-3 lead.

A two-RBI single from Williamsport in the top of the ninth gave the Cutters a 5-4 lead and put the pressure back on West Virginia's offense. This time, they were unable to come through with their backs against the wall, going down in order in the bottom half of the inning, dropping the game and evening the series at 1-1.

The loss drops the Black Bears to 23-37 on the season. They'll complete their series with Williamsport on Family Sunday Funday at Monongalia County Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM.
