Aberdeen Wings News Release
As soon as his flight left the United States headed for his home country of Iceland, Wings forward #21 Bjorn Sigurdarson was not beginning his off-season. Rather he was representing team Iceland at the 2015 IIHF World Ice Hockey Championships.
Merely two hours after landing in Reykjavik, Iceland, Sigurdarson was on the ice again apparently without jet leg. Monday, April 13th the tournament started with Iceland playing Belgium. Sigurdarson scored a goal one minute into the 3rd period to lead Iceland to a 3-0 victory. He would also add two assists. Next up for Iceland was Serbia. Again Sigurdarson would have a solid game scoring two assists, but Iceland would fall 5-4. He would add another assist in a 4-2 loss to Spain. On Friday, Iceland hammered Australia 6-1. In the second period of that game, Sigurdarson scored a short-handed goal. Team Iceland would end the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Romania, but for Sigurdarson he was named forward MVP scoring two goals and 5 assists. He was also named 3rd Star of the tournament.
Earlier this season, while a member of the Aberdeen Wings, Sigurdarson was named the 2014 Icelandic National Hockey Player of the Year. In two seasons with Aberdeen, he scored 27 goals and 42 assists. He was selected for the 2015 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.
