Buffalo Bisons News Release

April 4, 2019 | 2:05 p.m. ET | Sahlen Field | Buffalo, NY | Game 1| Home Game #1

BUFFALO BISONS (NR, -, North) vs. SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE RAILRIDERS (NR, -, North)

RHP Jacob Waguespack (NR) vs. LHP Gio Gonzalez (NR)

Opening Day

The Bisons are 19-12 all-time in Sahlen Field Home Openers, including 5-2 since 2012. Last year the Herd opened the home schedule with a 2-1 loss to the Indianpolis Indians. It was one of just two games played of the seven-game homestand. Inclement weather postponed the remaining five games.

Bobby Meacham

Bobby Meacham returns as the manager of the Bisons for a third straight season. The Herd is 2-0 on Opening Day under the former MLB shortstop, including a 4-3 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox last season. In two seasons, the Bisons

are 21-16 under Meacham in the month of April. Meacham played for the Bisons in 1989, in addition to his stint as

manager.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (0-0)

The Bisons went 8-8 in against the principal affiliate of the New York Yankees last season. The two teams each went 5-3 at home, including wins for the Herd in two of the last three meetings at then Coca-Cola Field from August 21-23.

Two Years Ago

The last time the Herd opened the season at home was two years ago, defeating the RailRiders 4-2 on April 8, 2017. First baseman Rowdy Tellez hit a pair of solo home runs in the win.

Today's Starter

Jacob Waguespack has been tabbed as the Herd's Opening Day starter. The 25-year-old right hander was acquired at the trade deadline last season from the Phillies for LHP Aaron Loup. Two days later Waguespack started against Lehigh Valley and set a Modern Era record with 12 strikeouts in his Bisons debut.

Sahlen Field

On October 9, 2018 the Bisons and the Sahlen Packing Company entered into a 10-year naming rights agreement for the Downtown Ballpark. Sahlen Field is the sixth different name in the 32-year history of the stadium.

Blue Jays Update

Toronto (3-4) begins a four-game series in Cleveland against the Indians tonight at 6:10 p.m. Right hander Aaron Sanchez will take the hill for the Jays as this is the first of an overall six-game series. The team will then head to Boston on Monday, before meeting the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday for their home opener at Fenway Park.
