PawSox Earn Thrilling Win on Opening Day
April 4, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The PawSox kicked off the 2019 season in thrilling fashion, coming from behind in the eighth and scoring three runs in the 10th to defeat the Syracuse Mets, 6-3, on Thursday afternoon on a cold and blustery afternoon.
Tony Renda delivered a bases-clearing three-run double in the top of the 10th inning to break a 3-3 tie after Michael Chavis had belted a game-tying solo homer in the top of the eighth.
Chavis, who started at first base, went 3-for-4 with a walk and the solo homer that left the bat at approximately 110 MPH. Catcher Sandy León went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles and threw out former teammate Rajai Davis trying to steal third base in a tie game with two outs in the eighth with Tim Tebow at the plate for Syracuse. Mike Miller went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and walked three times, while Bryce Brentz had a hit and three walks as well in his return to the Red Sox organization.
Starter Mike Shawaryn struck out seven in 5.1 innings and carried his low-90s velocity into the sixth inning. Then Marcus Walden (1.2 IP, 2 K), Josh Taylor (2 IP, 3 K) and Jenrry Mejia (1-2-3 10th) combined to stymie the Mets down the stretch.
The PawSox continue their series in Syracuse on Friday at 1:05 p.m. Pawtucket right-hander Chandler Shepherd is scheduled to oppose Syracuse righty Corey Oswalt. Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 12:35 p.m.
Pawtucket's home opener is slated for next Thursday (April 11) at 6:05 p.m. Good tickets are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games.
