
Biscuits Take a Pair from Jumbo Shrimp, 2-0 and 5-4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Montgomery Biscuits scored two sixth-inning runs for a 2-0 win completing Thursday's rain-suspended game and then won a 5-4, seven-inning contest to take the first two games of a series over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp before 8,206 saw NAPA AutoCare Family Fireworks Friday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The teams resumed Thursday's scoreless game with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Biscuits left-hander Travis Ott (3-1) began with 2 2/3 scoreless inning. Meanwhile, Montgomery (4-4 second half, 41-37 overall) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning against Jacksonville right-hander Reilly Hovis (0-1). Third baseman Peter Maris walked with one out, stole second base and went to third base on a groundout by right fielder Ryan Boldt. Second baseman Nick Solak hit an RBI infield single, stole second base and scored on first baseman Nate Lowe's RBI single. Hovis completed 2 1/3 relief innings. Montgomery right-hander Yoel Espinal pitched two hitless innings for his first save.
In the seven-inning game, the Biscuits took a 2-0, first-inning lead against Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Cody Poteet (2-9). Center fielder Thomas Milone hit a leadoff home run to left field, and Maris hit a one-out single, advanced on two errors by shortstop Chris Diaz and scored on Poteet's wild pitch. Jacksonville (3-5, 31-45) answered with a first-inning run against right-hander Benton Moss, as center fielder Monte Harrison walked, stole second and third bases and scored on first baseman Peter O'Brien's RBI single. Biscuits third baseman Mike Brosseau led off the second inning with home run to left field, but Jacksonville left fielder Brian Miller hit an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2. The Jumbo Shrimp took their only lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Miller had a bunt single against left-hander Matt Krook (2-2), and second baseman Isan Diaz hit a two-run home run to left field. In the fifth inning, Biscuits shortstop Jake Cronenworth hit a game-tying sacrifice fly, and designated hitter David Rodriguez hit a go-ahead RBI single to make it 5-4. Left-hander Jordan Harrison and right-hander Curtis Taylor each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the Biscuits' win.
UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp will continue their series with Montgomery at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, when Jacksonville right-hander Merandy Gonzalez (0-2) is scheduled to face Biscuits left-hander Genesis Cabrera (6-4). Gates open at 5:30 p.m., when the first 2,000 fans receive a replica Jacksonville Red Caps Hat presented by Florida Blue. Caps matching those worn by the team will be for sale in the souvenir store. For Jacksonville Red Caps Negro League Night, the Jumbo Shrimp will wear throwback uniforms of the Jacksonville Red Caps, the local Negro American League team in 1938 and 1941-42. Former Negro League players Harold Buster Hair, a Jacksonville native, and Clifford Layton will be recognized before the game and greet fans on the concourse. Fans can view Negro League memorabilia on the concourse and learn more local and national Negro League baseball history on the video board throughout the evening.
