Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Biscuits used one of their most complete performances of the season in game one of Sunday's doubleheader to notch an 8-0 win, but were doomed by the long ball in game two, falling 7-3 and settling for a doubleheader split with the Mississippi Braves.

In game one, the Biscuits used their biggest frame of the season to pull away. With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, Nevin Ashley doubled home a pair to put the Biscuits up 3-0. Greg Sexton followed with a single to plate two more. Cody Cipriano then singled, and Cody Strait doubled to score Sexton. John Matulia finished the scoring with his second hit of the inning, scoring two and giving the Biscuits an 8-0 lead.

The Biscuits had scored seven runs in a game just twice this season before that seven-run fifth.

Strait and Matulia each had two hits to pace the Biscuits

Alex Torres (2-1) was brilliant in game one, tossing six scoreless innings and giving up just two this to pick up the win. Mississippi starter Mike Minor fell to 0-2 with the loss.

In game two, Biscuits starter Rayner Oliveros gave up a run in the first inning on a double from Mauro Gomez. The Biscuits, though, would answer with two in the third. Emeel Salem scored on a passed ball to tie things up at 1-1, and Chris De La Cruz touched the plate on a fielder's choice groundout from Matt Fields.

The Braves used a two-run shot from Gomez in the fourth to retake the lead, and a Cody Johnson solo-shot to expand that lead to 4-2. Ryan Reid came on in the fifth inning and gave up three more to complete the Braves scoring.

Montgomery got their final run in the seventh and final frame on a single from Emeel Salem.

Mississippi starter Jacob Thompson (2-2) got a no-decision, and Oliveros (0-1) took his first decision in the form of a loss. Lee Hyde goes to 1-0 with a scoreless inning of relief.

The two teams meet again on Monday night at 7:05 with LHP Darin Downs throwing for the Biscuits against Mississippi RHP Kyle Cofield.
