Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala, - After knocking just three home runs in the season's first 16 games, the BayBears smashed four in the contest on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium as they belted the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, 11-4, snapping a four-game skid.

Knotted up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second, Ricardo Sosa laced a fastball over the fence in left field to put the BayBears (8-9) on top 2-1. It was the first of two home runs surrendered by West Tenn (7-10) starter Luis Munoz (0-1).

Munoz was bitten again by the long ball in the bottom of the fifth but not before the BayBears grabbed a 3-2 lead on a triple to right-center off the bat of Evan Frey to bring home Ollie Linton. The next hitter, Collin Cowgill, teed off on a hanging curve, drilling a two-run bomb to put the BayBears up by three.

Bryan Byrne had one of his biggest nights in a BayBear uniform with three hits in four tries including a pair of solo home runs. Byrne's first blast was to straightaway center field off reliever Steve Bray. Byrne touched Bray again in the seventh inning with an opposite-field blow which put the BayBears up 8-4.

Jake Elmore contributed with a 3-for-3 ballgame, missing the cycle by a home run. Elmore tripled home Cyle Hankerd in the seventh and scored on the second RBI hit of night from Frey.

Tom Layne (2-0) was the benefactor of the offensive output as he was strong over 7.1 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) while allowing six hits. Layne did cough up a pair of home runs in the ballgame, to Mike Wilson and Jeff Dominguez, the first home runs hit off Layne since May 22, 2009.

The BayBears continue a 10-game homestand with the third of their five contests against the Diamond Jaxx at 7:05 p.m. on Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
