Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Biscuits took an early lead and rolled behind a strong pitching performance to a 4-1 win over the Mississippi Braves in the series-opener of a five-game series on Wednesday night.
The Biscuits jumped on top quickly with a run off Braves' starter Ryne Reynoso in the first inning. Reynoso walked Rashad Eldridge leading off the ballgame for Montgomery. Chris Nowak then cracked a perfect hit-and-run single moving Eldridge to third. He scored on a sacrifice-fly to center field to give the Biscuits the lead, 1-0.
Montgomery added to their lead in the third inning, as Eldridge again sparked the rally, this time with a triple. A batter later, Nowak lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Biscuits ahead, 2-0. With two outs, Jose Lobaton got the Biscuits started again with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored as Cody Strait rolled an infield-single which Brandon Hicks allowed to roll past him. The error on Hicks made the second run of the inning unearned off of Reynoso.
Reynoso surrendered a second triple and eventually another run in the fourth. J.T. Hall supplied the triple, sending a ball to the warning-track in left-center field with one out. Brandon Chaves then contributed the Biscuits third sacrifice fly of the ballgame for a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Biscuits' starter Rayner Oliveros was cruising. He worked five scoreless innings before Matt Young doubled off of him with one out in the sixth inning. Oliveros got the next out before the Biscuits summoned left-handed specialist Mike Wlodarczyk to face Jason Heyward. Wolodarczyk struck out Heyward to end the inning. Oliveros (5-1) worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his fifth win. He allowed just two hits, walking two and striking out three.
Reynoso (6-8) was tagged with the loss over six innings for Mississippi. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits, walking two and striking out three. He lost for the third time in the three starts against the Biscuits and second time at Riverwalk Stadium.
Matt Gorgen worked two scoreless innings of relief in the seventh and eighth innings before handing the ballgame off to Eddie Morlan in the ninth. Morlan allowed the lone Mississippi run of the ballgame, with Willie Cabrera scoring on an RBI single from Greg Creek to cap the scoring.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. LHP Brandon Mann (6-7, 4.44) will make the start for Montgomery against LHP Scott Diamond (5-10, 3.57) for Mississippi.
