Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - An early lead went unsupported as the BayBears allowed the Huntsville Stars to score in each of the final four innings in a 6-4 loss to kick off a five-game homestand on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The BayBears (55-61, 18-28) jumped on Huntsville (55-59, 17-28) starter Brandon Kintzler in the first inning as Evan Frey and Pedro Ciriaco singled to put runners on the corners with one away. Ricardo Sosa was at the dish when Ciriaco busted for second base as he swiped his 30th bag of the season, Frey dashed for the plate to make it 1-0.
In the fourth, the BayBears singled their way to another run as Ciriaco reached on a hit and took third on a knock by Sosa. Bryan Byrne followed with a smash to right-center which brought home Ciriaco, giving the BayBears a two-run cushion.
Huntsville finally reached the dish in the sixth against Tom Layne who was strong in 5.2 innings. Jonathon Lucroy belted a two-out double to extend the frame for Taylor Green who bounced a base hit off Ciriaco's bare hand. As the ball slipped away from Ciriaco, Lucroy crossed the plate for the first Stars' run.
Mark Hallberg quickly got that tally back in the sixth as he ripped his second home run to extend his hit streak to 14 games. Drew Anderson's dinger in the seventh off Josh Ellis (3-2) pulled the Stars back within one.
The game got away from the BayBears in the eighth as Chuckie Caufield walked to lead-off and moved up to second on a hit by Lucroy. With Jordan Norberto in the contest, Green doubled home Caufield to tie the game. Michael Garciaparra's sac fly pulled in Lucroy to give the Stars a 4-3 lead.
That advantage would be extended in the ninth inning as Lorenzo Cain smacked a two-run long ball off Norberto. Frey brought Chris Rahl to the plate in the bottom of the ninth against Rob Wooten (S, 7) with a groundout to finish the scoring.
The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. They battle the Stars in game two of their five-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 with Wes Roemer (6-7, 4.33) getting the start. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
