Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (17-29) dropped the series opener to the Birmingham Barons (29-17) Wednesday night at Five County Stadium by the score of 9-1.
Carolina pitching struggled from the beginning as starter Luis Montono surrendered eleven hits, leading to four earned runs over five innings pitched. Ramon Geronimo allowed three earned runs in two innings in relief of Montono. Chris Kelly also labored out of the pen for Carolina, giving up two earned runs in the ninth inning.
Birmingham pounded out 18 hits, including nine for extra bases. Six Barons collected multiple hits. Christian Marrero went 4-5, including a solo home run in the third inning. Jim Gallagher collected three hits and four RBI, thanks in part to his three-run homer in the fifth.
Barons' starter Matt Long pitched brilliantly, tossing six shutout innings while allowing six hits and striking out five. Henry Mabee threw two perfect innings in relief of Long to preserve the shutout before Ricky Brooks surrendered a solo-shot in the ninth.
Carolina collected only seven hits, including two hits from Jose Castro. The Mudcats lone run came on the homer in the ninth inning off the bat of Stephen Chapman.
Game two of the series is set for 7:15 PM Thursday night at Five County Stadium. Carolina lefty Tom Cochran (4-4, 3.33) will oppose Birmingham's Charlie Shirek (4-4, 3.18).
