PENSACOLA, Flo. - The Biscuits (59-51) made it interesting late, but ultimately dropped the series opener to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (58-50), 5-4, on Thursday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Brock Burke (2-1) was making just his fourth Double-A start and looked sharp early, striking out the side in the bottom of the first and racking up seven punchouts through the southpaw's first four scoreless innings (he would finish with nine). The lefty got some offensive help from shortstop Jake Cronenworth, who drilled a three-run homer over the right field wall and picnic area to put the Biscuits ahead, 3-0, in the third against Seth Varner (6-2)
Varner settled down after that, however, and in the fifth, the Wahoos finally got to Burke with a Gavin LaValley walk and a Chris Okey single, before a 13-pitch at-bat ended with a ground-rule RBI-double for Luis Gonzalez to make it 3-1. The next batter was Jose Siri, and the designated hitter yanked a two-run triple down the left field line to tie the game at three.
In the sixth, Burke hit Aristedes Aquino with a pitch, and then Mitch Nay crushed a two-run home run 441 feet over the left field wall to give the Wahoos the lead for good. Curtis Taylor worked two scoreless innings of relief to keep the Biscuits in the game, and an RBI-fielder's choice in the ninth by Thomas Milone got Montgomery within one. But Wahoos closer Alex Powers struck out Nathan Lukes to end the game with Milone at first, and the Biscuits lost their fourth game in five contests to Pensacola this season.
The Biscuits will try to rebound on Friday night when Sam McWilliams (4-6) takes on Vladimir Gutierrez (8-9) at 6:35 PM.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium to host the Birmingham Barons on August 8 when it will be Military Wednesday, featuring an F-35 Figurine Giveaway presented by AUM. The series also includes 'Rally in the Alley' Bar Crawl with a T-Shirt Giveaway on Thursday, August 9, Local Legends Night with MAX Fireworks on Friday, August 10, and Wrestling Night with MAX Fireworks on Saturday, August 11. The series concludes with Bark in the Park and Kids Day, featuring a Kids Baseball Giveaway, on Sunday, August 12.
