Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - Biloxi Shuckers outfielder Corey Ray has been named the Southern League Player of the Month for July, the Southern League announced on Thursday. The Milwaukee Brewers' #4 prospect becomes the first Shuckers player to win the award since Brandon Woodruff garnered the honor in July of 2016.
Ray finished the month slashing .282/.333/.628/.961 with 11 home runs, 27 RBI, 25 runs scored, eight doubles and 13 stolen bases. Among batters who qualified, Ray led the Southern League in home runs, RBI, runs scored, extra-base hits (20), total bases (76) and slugging percentage (.628). His 11 home runs and 20 extra-base hits were the most in Minor League Baseball during the month of July. He also became the first player in all of Minor League Baseball to reach 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases this year when he launched a long ball on July 24.
In July, Ray collected ten multi-hit efforts, including a 2-for-5 night on July 9 when he collected five RBI against the Jackson Generals. He also provided a three-homer game on July 11 against Jackson, going deep in the first, third and sixth innings. It was the first time a Shuckers player has hit three home runs in a game at MGM Park. Four days later, Ray stole a career-high four bases in Jacksonville against the Jumbo Shrimp. On the July 22, Ray torched the Tennessee Smokies with a pair of doubles and a home run. From July 19 to July 28, Ray collected at least one extra-base hit in eight of ten games.
The 2018 Southern League Mid-Season All-Star leads the league with 22 home runs, 29 doubles, 57 extra-base hits, 71 runs scored and 32 stolen bases on the season. He is also third in RBI with 64 and hits with 109. Taken fifth overall out of Louisville in the 2016 draft, Ray has set a new career-high in almost every offensive category this season.
Ray earns Southern League Player of the Month after also winning Southern League Player of the Week for July 16. The Shuckers have now taken home six Southern League honors this year, with Jake Gatewood winning Southern League Player of the Week for May 27 and Jon Olczak earning Relief Pitcher of the Month for May. RHP Zack Brown garnered Pitcher of the Week honors for June 11, and recently RHP Trey Supak was named Pitcher of the Week for July 23.
