August 2, 2018 - Southern League (SL1) News Release

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs are proud to announce that Biloxi Shuckers outfielder Corey Ray has been named the Southern League Player of the Month for July.

Ray, 23, appeared in all 29 games for Biloxi last month and led all qualified Southern League hitters in home runs (11), extra-base hits (20), total bases (76), slugging percentage (.628), runs scored (25), and RBI (27) during that time span. The Shuckers center fielder also ranked among the Southern League leaders in hits (33, T-5th), stolen bases (13, 2nd), and OPS (.961, 4th) during the month of July.

On July 11 the Chicago, Illinois native became the second Southern League slugger to belt three home runs in a single game this season. Ray was named Southern League Player of the Week on July 23 and became the first player in Minor League Baseball to record both 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases this year when he belted his 20th home run of the season as part of a 2-for-5 performance on July 24.

A 2018 Southern League midseason All-Star, Ray currently leads the league this year in home runs (22), extra-base hits (57), total bases (216), and stolen bases (32). He is also among the league leaders in RBI (64, 3rd), hits (109, 3rd), runs scored (71, T-1st), and slugging percentage (.508, 3rd). No player in Southern League history (since 1964) has led the league in both home runs and stolen bases at season's end.

Ray was a first round selection (no. 5 overall) of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of Louisville. As a professional, Ray has been named to both the 2017 MLB Futures Game roster as well as the 2017 Arizona Fall League Rising Stars squad. As an amateur, Ray played for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and appeared in the Under Armour All-American Game while attending Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, Illinois. He is an alumnus of the Chicago White Sox Amateur City Elite (ACE) program.
