Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla - The Biscuits (27-29) took a one-run lead in the top of the eighth inning, but the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (35-21) responded with seven unanswered runs to clinch the series with a 10-4 victory on Saturday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Mason Montgomery and Jonathan Bermudez both had solid performances in their respective starts, recording four scoreless innings to open the game before the bats began to warm up.
The first pair of runs came in the top of the fifth when Austin Shenton hit a line drive into center field for a double. The 2-0 lead for Montgomery stood strong until the bottom of the sixth when Pensacola picked up momentum.
Will Banfield put the Blue Wahoos on the board with an RBI-single to center field, cutting the Biscuits' lead in half. Two at-bats later, Bennett Hostetler fired a home run over the center field wall to put Pensacola ahead 3-2.
The action did not pick up again until the top of the eighth inning when Shenton tied the game with a solo-homer behind center field. Mason Auer recorded a double moments later, and Diego Infante capitalized with an RBI-single to put the Biscuits back in the lead 4-3.
Auer's double extended his hitting streak to nine games, which is tied for the longest such streak by any Biscuit this season. It is currently the second-longest active streak in the Southern League, and the right fielder also carries a 12-game on-base streak into the series finale.
The bottom of the eighth was catastrophic for Montgomery as the bases were immediately loaded with no outs for the Blue Wahoos. Cody Morissette hit a two-run double into right field to take the lead back, but Pensacola was not done.
Dalvy Rosario sent a three-run shot over the left field wall to extend the lead to four, but a two-run single from Troy Johnston made the score 10-4 and capped off a seven-run inning.
The Biscuits were unable to respond as Cristian Charle (3-1) retired the side in order. The defeat seals the first series loss for Montgomery since April 30, which was also against the Blue Wahoos.
Charle earned his third win of the season while John Doxakis (2-2) recorded his second loss. As for the starters, Montgomery finished the evening with three runs allowed off five hits and four strikeouts. Bermudez allowed two runs off four hits and recorded two strikeouts, and both starters finished with six innings pitched.
The Biscuits and the Blue Wahoos will close their six-game series on Sunday, June 11 with a featured pitching matchup of Anthony Molina (2-4) for the Biscuits against Luis Palacios (4-1) for Pensacola.
The Biscuits return to Riverwalk Stadium on June 13 to play the Biloxi Shuckers. The series will include a Hawaiian Shirt Giveaway presented by RTJ at Capitol Hill on Thirsty Thursday, June 15; Ladies Night on Friday, June 16; Outdoors Night presented by Outdoor Alabama feat. Specialty Jerseys and Max Fireworks on Saturday, June 17th; and a Father's Day Pint Glass Giveaway presented by Common Bond Brewers and Bark in the Park on Sunday, June 18th.
