Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (47-36) used a couple of timely hits and a strong performance from their pitching staff to shut out the Tennessee Smokies (35-44), 2-0, in Sunday afternoon's series finale at Riverwalk Stadium. The Biscuits won the series five games to two.
Easton McGee (3-0), who was coming off of a career-high 12-strikeout performance against the Smokies on Tuesday, started again for the Biscuits and worked a scoreless first with a strikeout stranding runners at first and third.
Caleb Kilian (0-1) was on the other side for Tennessee, and the right-hander walked Jonathan Aranda, who stole second, but retired everyone else in a scoreless bottom of the first, picking up a strikeout of his own.
McGee would strand a couple more runners in a scoreless second, as Kilian retired the Biscuits in order in the bottom half of the same inning. McGee kept the Smokies off the board in the top of the third, before three-consecutive two-out singles by Xavier Edwards, Jonathan Aranda, and Ruben Cardenas made it 1-0 Biscuits in the bottom of the third.
The Biscuits got back-to-back singles from Niko Hulsizer and Cal Stevenson to open the bottom of the fourth before a Chris Betts RBI-double off the wall in right-center field increased the Montgomery lead to 2-0. McGee finished the afternoon going five more shutout innings to run his total to 11 scoreless innings this week against Tennessee.
Mikey York came on and worked 1.2 scoreless innings of relief before Jordan Brink came on and struck out Brennen Davis with runners at the corners to end the top of the seventh. Brink then worked a scoreless eighth before handing things over to Ivan Pelaez, who worked a scoreless ninth to earn his 10th save, and the Biscuits second shutout win of the season.
The Biscuits will now head to Pensacola to open up a six-game series against the Blue Wahoos beginning on Tuesday when Alex Valverde (2-2) takes on Kyle Nicolas (1-0) at 6:35 PM CT.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium for a six-game series against the Mississippi Braves starting on a Golden Biscuits Tuesday, on August 17 at 6:35 PM CT.
