Brockton Rox News Release
(Little Falls, NJ) - The Brockton Rox (26-19) leapfrogged the New Jersey Jackals (26-20) to take hold of second place in the Can-Am League standings with a 4-3 victory Friday night, while continuing to add to a win streak that now sits at nine straight, with just one game to go in the first half.
Brockton took a 4-0 lead through the middle innings, breaking through against Jon Kibler (0-2) in the fourth with an RBI single from Chris Grossman that scored Keith Brachold. Scoring two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, the Rox chased Kibler after five and 2/3 frames. The southpaw gave up four runs on eight hits, while walking three and striking out two.
Brachold, Grossman, Melvin Falu and Shawn Williams each had two hits in the affair.
The Rox got solid starting pitching for the second straight night against the Jackals as Dustin Birosak (5-0) lasted into the eighth inning to pick up his team high-tying fifth win of the season. Birosak scattered just three hits through the first seven frames, while striking out five, before giving up three straight singles to open the eighth.
With the bases loaded, Myron Leslie closed the gap with a double to leftfield that knocked in two, while a throwing error by Chris Valencia allowed Leonard Davis to score from first base, making the score 4-3.
Following Leslie's at bat, Mark Rosen entered in relief and retired Mike Jones for the first out in the eighth. Jimmer Kennedy came next out of the pen and recorded the final five outs en route to his second save.
Nick Santomauro picked up two hits in his Jackals debut.
The teams will finish out the first half Saturday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium in the series finale as the Rox go for the sweep and their tenth consecutive win. Freddy Flores (4-2, 3.41) toes the rubber for Brockton and is opposed by Bobby Gagg (0-0, 2.66), with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m.
