Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - Rain trimmed a scheduled double-header into a single contest in which the Delmarva Shorebirds emerged victorious 8-2 over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Thursday night at the Bank of the James Stadium.
The Shorebirds (22-9) and Hillcats (16-15) saw their game the day prior suspended due to rain which forced it to be resumed as game one of a double-header that was not meant to be.
For the suspended game, play was resumed in the top of the third inning with no score.
Delmarva finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the fourth. With one away, Gunnar Henderson legged out a double and then advanced to third on a passed ball. After a walk, Henderson made a mad dash to the plate on a ball hit back to the pitcher and beat the tag to put the Shorebirds up 1-0.
A trio of Lynchburg errors gave Delmarva some cushion in the sixth. Greg Cullen doubled to start the inning before TT Bowens reached on an error that allowed him to take second while Cullen advanced to third. Jordan Cannon then hit a grounder to short that resulted in another error when the throw to first was dropped, allowing everyone to move up 90 feet with Cullen scoring. Trevor Kehe bounced another ball to short which was booted, allowing Bowens to score to make it 3-0. Kehe and Cannon then executed a double steal before Andrew Martinez walked to load the bases. Mason Janvrin flared a single to right to score Cannon to cap off the frame with the score now 4-0 Delmarva.
Lynchburg responded immediately in the bottom half. Yordys Valdes walked and after a strikeout, Gabriel Rodriguez singled to left. One out later, Yainer Diaz ripped a double to center, scoring two, and making it a 4-2 game.
From there however, it would be all Delmarva. The Shorebirds broke the game wide open with a four run eighth. Darell Hernaiz brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, Hudson Haskin drove in two with a double, and Henderson capped off the proceedings with an RBI triple to bring the game to its final line of 8-2.
Houston Roth (1-1) earned the win for Delmarva after starting the game after the suspension. Roth went five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four.
Miguel Vinicio (3-1) gets tagged with his first loss of the year for Lynchburg. Vinicio allowed just an unearned run over 2.2 innings on two hits and a walk while striking out two.
Starters for both clubs got washed away due to the suspension in play. Zach Peek began for Delmarva and threw two scoreless innings, striking out four while allowing just two hits. Daniel Espino matched Peek with two shutout frames starting for Lynchburg, striking out four as well with two hits and a walk allowed.
Henderson provided the thump in the middle of the Delmarva order, going 3-for-5 with a double and a triple. Seven of nine players in the lineup for Delmarva scored a run while seven of nine also collected hits.
Rodriguez had two of the four hits for the Lynchburg attack, the other two hits being doubles for Diaz and Alexfri Planez.
Game two was scheduled to be thirty minutes after the completion of game one, but more inclement weather foiled those plans as the second contest of the day had to be postponed.
With the postponement of the second game tonight, the Shorebirds and Hillcats will play a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 11 at the Bank of the James Stadium.
