Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds were unable to weather the constant offensive attack by the Charleston RiverDogs on Friday night, falling 12-6 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark.

The loss cements a series loss for the Shorebirds (15-28) while the RiverDogs (30-13) have lost only once on their current 12-game homestand.

The scoring started early and often for both sides. Delmarva plated two in the first inning with Isaac Bellony driving in a run with a double, despite Noelberth Romero also getting thrown out at the plate, and Trendon Craig knocking one in with a single two batters later.

Charleston answered in the bottom of the first as Shane Sasaki scored from second on a booted groundball at second and Bobby Seymour then drove in a run with a double to tie the game at 2-2.

With two in scoring position and two out in the third, Craig hit a tapper just left of the mound that induced a throwing error from the pitcher, allowing two runs to score and restoring the 'Birds two-run lead.

Charleston again answered the call immediately in the bottom of the inning. After Dru Baker and Willy Vasquez singled to start the frame, Mason Auer drove them both in with a triple to tie the game. Vasquez then scored on a Seymour sacrifice fly to give Charleston a 5-4 lead.

Now trailing, Luis Valdez walked with two out and then swiped second in the fourth. Mishael Deson then rolled a single through the left side to tie the game at 5-5.

Charleston pulled away for good in the bottom of the fourth. Dawson Dimon roped an RBI single to make it 6-5 and Charleston tacked on another in the fifth as Oneill Manzueta doubled and then scored after two wild pitches.

Two insurance runs came in for Charleston in the seventh as Dimon knocked a two-run, two-out, double.

The RiverDogs added three for good measure in the eighth as Dru Baker scored on a fielder's choice with the infield in, Manzueta laced a triple to knock in a run and then scored a batter later to make it 12-5.

Deson collected his second RBI single of the day in the ninth but ended up getting doubled off of first on a liner to end the ballgame, 12-6.

Austin Vernon (6-0) picked up the win for Charleston out of the bullpen, allowing just a run over five innings on four hits and a walk, striking out 11.

Juan De Los Santos (1-5) suffered the loss for Delmarva, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits, striking out five.

The Shorebirds continue their series with the RiverDogs on Saturday, May 28. Dan Hammer (2-2, 5.76) is scheduled to go for Delmarva against Ben Peoples (1-2, 3.60) for Charleston. First pitch from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark is slated for 6:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
