Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Delmarva's offense came alive early, staking the Shorebirds to an early lead that they would sustain throughout in their 8-5 triumph over West Virginia on Thursday night in Charleston. Three straight singles to begin the game by Matt Angle, Matt Tucker, and Tyler Henson put Delmarva on the board, as they plated two in the first to get on top. After Pedro Silveren's two out RBI single in the second gave Delmarva a 3-0 edge, the Power offense awakened. West Virginia plated two runs in the bottom of the second to bring them within one, but that was the closest the Power would ever get on the evening.

Shorebird starter Tony Butler allowing four runs, scattering eight hits over six innings, and picked up his first victory of the season. Zach Clark pitched the seventh, eighth, and ninth, yielding just a solo home run in the seventh and earned his first save as a pro.

Still a 3-2 ballgame heading to the fifth, the ‘Birds broke it open with a four-run frame, capped off by Joe Mahoney's towering blast to right field, his second homer of the season, a two run shot that put Delmarva on top 7-2. While the pesky Power eked out a run apiece in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to bring West Virginia to within two at 7-5, Joe Nowicki gave Delmarva some extra breathing room in the eighth with his second round tripper of the season, a solo homer that was more than enough insurance for Delmarva.

Shortstop Matt Tucker went 3-5 with two doubles and two runs batted in, while Anthony Martinez continued his hot hitting, going 3-4 with a two-bagger and a couple of singles.

The Shorebirds have now won five straight games at Appalachian Power Park dating back to last season, and eight of their last nine over the last two years.
