Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - Thanks to a couple of crooked numbers on the board the Delmarva Shorebirds managed to sweep their doubleheader from the Lynchburg Hillcats by scores of 8-7 and 10-6 on Wednesday night at the Bank of the James Stadium.
Coming into the day, the Shorebirds (47-39) had been swept in three consecutive doubleheaders, including one at the hands of the Hillcats (43-43).
Game One
The Shorebirds started the scoring with a three spot in the third. After the first two reached to start the frame, Lamar Sparks sent them both home with a two-run double to right-center. After an infield single from Mason Janvrin advanced Sparks to third, he then scored on a double play to make it 3-0.
Lynchburg responded immediately in the bottom half of the frame. Andres Melendez smacked a solo homer, his fourth of the season, to start the inning before Johnathan Rodriguez capped it with an RBI single to make it 3-2.
Alexfri Planez vaulted Lynchburg on top in the fourth with a two-run homer, his 11th of the year.
Delmarva struck back with a two-run homer of their own from Cristopher Cespedes, his 12th of the campaign, to claim the lead back 5-4.
An error and a double put two in scoring position to begin the sixth for Lynchburg before Yordys Valdes singled to left to tie the game at 5-5. After Valdes stole second, Korey Holland roped a single to center to plate two and put Lynchburg ahead 7-5.
The Shorebirds dug deep and found one final rally in the seventh. Sparks reached on an error to start the inning with Janvrin following with a single. Darell Hernaiz then hit a frozen rope double to center, scoring Sparks, and pushing Janvrin to third. After a strikeout, Jean Carmona banged a double off the wall in center to plate both runners and put Delmarva ahead for good 8-7.
Thomas Girard (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Delmarva. Girard allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits.
Alec Wisely (1-2) swallowed the defeat for the Hillcats. Wisely conceded one run on two hits, allowing the finishing blow of Carmona's two-run double.
Game Two
The second game of the twin bill was just as wacky and hotly contested as game one, but was relatively steady through the first three innings.
The Hillcats plated one in the first thanks to back-to-back doubles from Jhonkensy Noel and Johnathan Rodriguez.
In the third, Rodriguez produced another run on a fielder's choice before a wild pitch plated Angel Martinez to make it 3-0.
The Shorebirds erupted to take the lead in the fourth. Carmona singled with one out and went to second on a passed ball. He then stole third with the throw squirting into left to allow him to score. Ryne Ogren jump started the rally with a single and one out later Trevor Kehe poked a single to right to put two on. Yorkislandy Alvarez came through with an RBI single to center with Kehe scampering to third. Willy Yahn then reached on an error in left that allowed Kehe to score to tie the game, with Yahn going to second and Alvarez to third. After Janvrin walked, TT Bowens laced a triple to right-center, clearing the bases and putting Delmarva ahead 6-3. Lamar Sparks capped the inning with an infield single to score Bowens and make it 7-3.
Lynchburg wouldn't go down easy however. After three walks loaded the bases, Planez and Jonathan Lopez each collected RBI singles with a wild pitch also plating a run to make it a one-run game.
That was as close as Lynchburg got however, as Delmarva managed to tack on some insurance runs.
In the sixth, Yahn and Janvrin each came through with RBI singles to extend the lead back out to 9-6.
Kehe provided the exclamation point in the seventh with an RBI double, to bring the game to its final line of 10-6.
In his Delmarva debut, Carlos Del Rosario (1-0) collected the win out of the bullpen. Del Rosario walked five while striking out four and was charged with three earned runs.
Hugo Villalobos (0-1) started and absorbed the loss for the Hillcats. Villalobos allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk, striking out four.
Leonardo Rodriguez picked up his third save with Delmarva, going 2.2 innings without being charged with a run, striking out five.
The Shorebirds and Hillcats continue their series on Thursday, August 12 at the Bank of the James Stadium. Jenson Elliott (2-1, 5.14) makes the start for Delmarva while Jamie Arias (6-3, 4.27) goes for Lynchburg. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:15 on Fox Sports 960 AM and streaming online with Sam Jellinek on the call. MiLB.TV coverage will be provided by Lynchburg.
