August 11, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

After taking an early, lead the Myrtle Beach Pelicans couldn't hold on as the Charleston RiverDogs snapped the seven-game winning streak with a 7-2 win on Wednesday night. The Pelicans fall back to .500 at 43-43, while the RiverDogs move up to 61-24 with the win.

Matt Warkentin (2-4, 3B, 2 R) scored both runs for the Pelicans with a single and a triple on the loss. Kevin Made (2-4) also posted a multi-hit game as the Birds' lineup stalled for just two runs off eight hits. Myrtle Beach left seven runners on base and hit a bleak 1-7 with runners in scoring position.

Richard Gallardo (2-7) lost his seventh game of the year after starting the contest and lasting 4 1/3 innings with four earned runs off six hits including a home run. Gabriel Jaramillo was the third and final pitcher used by the Pelicans, as he gave up two earned runs for the first time since June 27th. In the field, the Pelicans combined for four errors.

Charleston reached double-digit hits for the second night in a row with 11 for the game, four of them being extra-base hits. Jonathan Embry (3-5, 2 R) led the team with three singles, while Beau Brundage (2-5, HR, 3B, 2 RBI) brought home two runs off a solo homer and a triple.

Nomar Rojas (3-0) took the win after throwing 2 1/3 innings in relief with no runs and two hits allowed. He struck out two and walked one. Seth Johnson threw the opening 4 2/3 frames with six hits and two unearned runs sacrificed. The RiverDogs also had problems in the field with three errors for the game.

The Pelicans opened up with an early lead as Warkentin singled with two outs to reach base. Yohendrick Pinango followed with an infield single to short as Warkentin got to second. Ed Howard followed by hitting a fly ball to right field that bounced off the glove of Diego Infante and allowed Warkentin to come home to score the game's first run on a fielding error.

Charleston responded in the top half of the fourth as Brundage hit a fly ball the opposite way that sailed over the right-field fence for a solo homer.

The home team jumped right back in front as Warkentin led off the bottom side with a triple that hit the center wall. He scored on a throwing error by Berglund down to third on a pickoff attempt and Myrtle Beach had a 2-1 lead.

The RiverDogs would take control with three runs in the top of the fifth. Johan Lopez led off the inning with a double to center field and moved to third on a groundout by Berglund. Alika Williams hit him home on a single to right field that Pinango had trouble picking up as Williams moved to second. After Osleivis Basabe walked, Alberto Sojo came in for Gallardo to try and finish the inning. He gave up a single to Murray in his first batter faced as Williams scored, and Infante followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Basabe to give Charleston a 4-2 lead.

Charleston added runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth to push away from Myrtle Beach. Embry led off the sixth with a single and came around on a throwing error by Matt Warkentin after a ground ball by Alexander Ovalles. The play was called interference on Made as Embry scored the fifth run of the game for the RiverDogs.

Embry scored again in the eighth after leading off with a single. Two batters later, Berglund hit a double to right that played Embry to make it 6-2.

Brundage hit a two-out triple in the ninth to plate Infante and extended the lead to 7-2.

Myrtle Beach and Charleston will meet for game three of the series on Thursday night with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
