Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Despite a three-run ninth inning rally, the Delmarva Shorebirds fell short in an 8-4 loss on Friday night to the Down East Wood Ducks at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
After the Shorebirds (45-36) took the first two games of the series the Wood Ducks (45-36) have now rallied to tie the series at 2-2.
Down East got on the board first in the third. Brady Smith singled to start the frame and one out later Jayce Easley pummeled a two-run homer to right, his first of the year, to put Down East ahead 2-0.
Smith started another Down East rally in the fifth with another single. After a flyout, Easley walked before Daniel Mateo lined a single to left to plate Smith to make it 3-0.
In the sixth, Angel Aponte singled with one out and then stole second. Keithron Moss then poked a double to left to score Aponte to put the Wood Ducks ahead 4-0. Moss proceeded to steal third with Smith scoring him on a sacrifice fly.
Trevor Kehe got the Shorebirds on the board in the seventh when he tripled off the wall in right with the ensuing relay resulting in an error allowing Kehe to score.
The Wood Ducks appeared to break the game open in the ninth. Luisangel Acuna roped an RBI single with Thomas Saggese ripping a two-run triple later in the inning to extend the lead to 8-1.
The Shorebirds did not go down without a fight, however. They loaded the bases to start the inning with a wild pitch plating a run before Willy Yahn walked to reload the bases. Logan Michaels then drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Yorkislandy Alvarez slapped a single to load the bases again before Lamar Sparks grounded into an RBI fielder's choice. Down East managed to strand the tying run in the on-deck circle however and secure the 8-4 win.
Mason Englert (5-3) collected the win for Down East. He managed five shutout frames, allowing just a hit and a walk while striking out five.
Houston Roth (6-2) absorbed the loss for Delmarva. Roth threw five innings, conceding three runs on five hits and two walks, striking out five.
Both Carmona and Kehe had multi-hit games, with Carmona going 2-for-4 with a run and a double while Kehe finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds will try to regain the upper hand in the series against the Wood Ducks on Saturday, August 7. Griffin McLarty (1-6, 4.75) is scheduled to take the ball for Delmarva against Nick Krauth (3-5, 4.31) for Down East. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
