Birds shutout Explorers, 3-0

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (7-7) returned to the Birdcage with a 3-0 shutout win over the Sioux City Explorers (5-11) on Friday night. Travis Kane pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only six hits, and striking out four.

The Canaries opened the scoring in the bottom half of the third inning when Grant Richardson led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Tim Hutting. Richardson scored on Beau Torbert's ground out to the third baseman, and Hutting came in on a single by Will Smith. After three innings the Canaries led, 2-0.

The Birds put one more run on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Josh Patton led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Explorer starting pitcher Dusty Bergman. Patton scored from third on a single up the middle by Ben Van Iderstine. After four innings the Canaries led, 3-0.

The lead would be more than enough for the victory. Kane (1-0) got his first win of the year and set-up the shutout with seven scoreless innings. Josh Kite and Kris Regas each pitched one perfect inning to seal the victory. In pitching the ninth, Regas got his fourth save of the year. Bergman (0-4) suffered the loss for Sioux City.

Pat Mahomes (3-0) takes the hill tomorrow for the Canaries, and the Explorers will counter with Nick Singleton (0-1). The 7:05 p.m. Saturday Night game will feature a Wooden Bat Giveaway presented by Shoeneman's Lumber. The first 500 kids 12 & under will receive a kid sized wooden bat.
