Birds Lose Series Finale, 6-4

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (8-9) dropped the series finale with the Lincoln Saltdogs (8-9) by a score of 6-4 on Sunday afternoon.

For the third game in a row, Lincoln scored in the first inning. Corey Harrington walked and then stole second to start the game. Pichi Balet singled advancing Harrington to third. Balet came around to score when Bryan Warner grounded into a double play. The Saltdogs led 1-0.

The Canaries came back right away in the bottom half of the inning. Trevor Lawhorn singled and crossed home plate on an RBI double by Juan Figueroa, 1-1. Ben Van Iderstine followed with a single advancing Figueroa to third. Matt Imwalle singled through the right side bringing Figueroa home, and giving the Canaries a 2-1 lead.

The Dogs took the lead back in the top of the fourth. Brett Cooley reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a single by Seth Pietsch. Jay Yaconetti hit a double to drive in Cooley and advance Pietsch to third, 2-2. Joe Dempsey hit an RBI single to score Pietsch, giving the Saltdogs a 3-2 advantage. Yaconetti tried to score on the play as well, but Cameron Coughlan cut him down at the plate with an outfield assist to end the inning.

Lincoln put two more up on the board in the sixth inning. Bryan Warner singled and Brett Cooley hit his ninth home run of the year to boost the Saltdogs' lead to three runs, 5-2.

The Canaries took two runs back in the home half of the sixth. Van Iderstine singled and scored on a triple by Imwalle, 5-3. Tim Marks hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Imwalle, bringing the Canaries to within one, 5-4.

The Saltdogs got an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Pietsch was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a single by Jay Yaconetti, and came around to score on a single by Ross McCoy to give the Saltdogs the final score of 6-4.

Kyle Ruwe (7-2) got his seventh win of the season. Micah Posey (3-7) suffered his the loss giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings. Matt Varner earned his 15th save, tying the Canaries Jerrod Fuell for the league-lead.

The Canaries begin a new series with the Shreveport Sports on Monday night at the Birdcage. Monday is "Will Ferrell Tribute Night."
