No Relief for Aviators, Streak at 10

July 22, 2007 - American Association (AA)
Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

Sunday evening, Coastal Bend dropped their tenth straight American Association contest with a 10-5 defeat at the hands of their nemesis, the El Paso Diablos. For the second time this year El Paso swept a four game series from the Aviators and now holds a commanding 14-4 edge in the season series. Despite the loss, the Aviators continue to play hard for nine innings. They led the game 2-0 after a half inning but would see El Paso consistently convert the type of chances they were unable to capitalize on all night.

Already ahead 3-2, the Diablos added to their lead in the home half of the second and third innings. Pedro Flores was able to retire the first two batters he faces before a double and a single scored a run in each frame. After seeing Coastal Bend inch back to a 5-3 deficit, the Diablos blew it open in the sixth against Flores and reliever Miguel Martinez. Albeniz Machado singled and stole second before Kory Drew hit a bloop single to center. Machado came around to score on the play and Drew advanced to second when Fryer overran the ball. Martinez relieved Flores to face Jorge Alvarez and surrendered a 2-run HR to left field, giving El Paso a 9-4 cushion. Alvarez's shot carried out of the park into a strong wind and over the 24ft high wall that surrounds Cohen Stadium's outfield.

When the game was over, Coastal bend had left 10 runners on base.

Starting pitcher Robbie Wachman picked up the win for the Diablos, improving his record to 4-3 on the season while Flores falls to 2-6. The Aviators will now head to Fort Worth for a 3 game series against the division-leading Cats whom they trail by 6.5 games. First pitch tomorrow night is at 7:05pm and can be heard locally on KOPY 1070 AM and online.
